little girl at the museum yesterday was super jumping up and down excited to see… a seagull

love that for her

oh 100%

I realize that now, and its a good reminder anytime I start to wonder if the grass is greener anywhere else

You can't logic your way out of being burnt out. Unless you're me. Who should be able to do it and it's a personal failing that I can't
rallidaerule.bsky.social
anyway now that I have opened up my brain/heart to bluesky

back to....my day of admin/meetings
rallidaerule.bsky.social
lol, yup

I learned in grad school that classroom teaching makes me miserable, I'm glad to have landed in a job with no teaching

teaching is important, and people who enjoy it should do it

1st day the instructor asked us our biggest leadership struggle

I said holding people accountable & acknowledging they are people

he said "ah yes, you must be my high D, high S, you are having a hard time"

(reader, I was/am)

high D = results driven
high S = value people/supporting them

since 2022 I went through a year long leadership training that was based around the DiSC communication system, which like many things has its flaws, but has really helped me understand myself, and how to adjust my communication to be effective with others

www.discprofile.com/what-is-disc...
What is the DiSC assessment?
DiSC® is a scientifically validated personality assessment tool that identifies behavioral insights to improve communication and productivity in the workplace.

yup, and many of us now in management are SO aware of that, and it really sucks, for us and the people we manage

many of the resources/trainings we're offered on leadership/management are terrible, and at least a lot of the folks in my circle feel like we're just constantly failing at it

here are the slides if anyone is interested

wanna see the slides?

I am not a person who makes notes on my slides, so I can't recall exactly what I said, but I think the slides hit the high points

2022 was a weird time, but I think I'd give a very similar talk today

thanks :) I just started in June! Its...a wild time to be president of a professional society!
rallidaerule.bsky.social
probably what I would add now is the difficulty of leading, but really more of managing people who are having a hard time (esp in a mental health context) with there are zero systems in place to catch people when they need it

Sorry I forgot the first part of the title "Leadership is hard"

which yes, also that.
Photo of the title slide of a talk on a screen at a conference. The title is "Leadership is hard: I wanted to study birds, where did all these people come from?" the author is listed as Auriel M.V. Fournier, Forbes Biological Station. The photo is from the 2022 Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting

I gave a talk at a conference...3 years ago titled "I wanted to study birds, where did all these people come from?"

and really it should have said people/paperwork

but yah, that is my job

and I mostly love it, but I am, admin/middle management who when I'm lucky thinks about science
rallidaerule.bsky.social
I have my dream job, 100% research, great team, applied work is valued. And the admin load is still incredible, when folks ask me about the reality of my day to day, they often look at me after like 'why would you do that?'

bc I do paperwork and attend meetings so other people can go study birds

I think that if most young people really knew how much non-science work a scientific career requires, most would not persue it. And I say that as someone with zero teaching and only grant and paper related admin.

I shudder just at the thought but please also report back ;)

I firmly stand on the idea that gifts/celebrations rolls down hill not up, and if you want to thank your boss for something, that can be appropriate, an email/brief one on one convo is fine
rallidaerule.bsky.social
just the concept of boss's day is what on earth. why

I one time had someone who worked for me very very jokingly wish me a happy boss's day and I about died on the spot

Photos coming out of Western AK are devastating.

Hardest hit are indigenous villages off road system, many miles by air from supplies. Most built on river deltas w/ no high ground to which to escape.

Cuts to NASA/NOAA mean worse weather data. Cuts to EPA mean no grants for erosion control. Etc.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.
Homes flooded in Kipnuk Flooding seen with water up to the crash barriers of local roads Sheds and debris lie scattered in the storm A small blue house has been blown onto its roof

We are now able to experience Whooping Cranes in ways that were unimaginable only a few decades ago. It's probably been hundreds of years since flocks, numbering in the dozens of individuals, danced together in the warm autumn light. #Birds #conservation #SK

just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”
