went to a delightful bluegrass jam in Brooklyn last night, played a No Kings protest song by an old-timer on uke, and was gifted a ticket by a stranger to see Michael Daves, Tony Trischka and Erik Alvar right afterwards. thanks NYC!

this seems to be happening with US Marshals too. they did an ICE-style show-of-force arrest at a gym in my town last week, didn't notify local police.

my sister was at Planet Fitness in Lake Forest Park, WA this afternoon, when a large number of US Marshals came in, and handcuffed a man literally while he was on a step machine. seemed to be looking for a fight. when confronted by patrons, they acted like bullies and refused to answer questions.

trying to get work done with ChatGPT feels like sitting down with a basket full of pull-tabs, examining and discarding one piece of trash after another, collecting little bits of value (which you're just going to "reinvest"), hoping the next one will be what you actually want.

i was never really 'into' tech until i started editing Wikipedia. the feeling of using text (wikicode) to reliably build something (a web page) and have it work exactly like i wanted it (unlike Word's nightmare UI) was empowering.

the AI user experience is the opposite. feels like pull-tabs.

there are definitely some specific ways AI is useful, they're just not profitable on the scale of the hype. image description (eg, Be My Eyes) is super useful for blind people, both for interacting with online photos and for taking photos and getting a description of the scene.
