There's some great charting of those first combinations Up North in here, though Priestland claims the chips came from Irish Catholics in Liverpool (but that was back in '72, so the Hugenot link's probably better scholarship!)

I really enjoyed reading this (published 1972) trying to track the origins of fish & chips, and it's genuinely a struggle to chart the cutoff point between just frying fish and using the kind of batter anyone would recognise today, or whether it's paired with chipped vs baked potatoes

A valiant attempt at dessert after ordering way too much for dinner, tragically neither flavour stood out enough to worth mentioning. Still really solid, and not far from the student district with €8/litre "Aperol" spritz!

The first two were really solid, but that pine nut overdose was incredible. Would honestly have gone back for three scoops of just that

Went back for an 11pm encore, the salted pistachio was definitely the better of the two. Best eaten while watching a massive traffic jam of black vans trying to drop people off at some fashion event

Absurdly strong start, biscuit w/ cherries probably taking first place. Had to be eaten far too quickly on account of the heat

No idea what the research since Priestland is like, but there's reason to believe that actually pairing fried fish with chipped potatoes came from up North

That's what I thought! I've got no idea what the latest conclusions are, but IIRC Priestland thinks there's no evidence of Joseph Malin pairing fish & chips by 1865 and that it was Bradfordians like 'Granny' Duce who mixed northern chips and southern fried fish
