That’s awful!! I started a webcomic literally 10 years ago and early on I asked my very few readers for constructive criticism and several people said it was “boring.” I ended the comic and it haunts me to this day ☹️ Sucks that to them it’s 1 word, but to us it’s something we just LIVE with

…in the sense that an idea “for a Normal fic w popular characters” hits me w the “but no one will like it so why bother ☹️” depression, but if it’s an idea that’s ACTIVELY self-indulgent / embarrassing, the thought that “well I CAN’T post this” removes the performance anxiety & makes writing easier

For me I’ve gone through looong, long bouts of creative drought, since I haven’t written anything in the last several years except when seized with intense “the words are unfolding in my head and I just have to get them OUT” inspiration, but for me it also helps to focus on writing “for myself”…

…don’t thumbnail the pages or it’ll trick my brain into thinking “I drew it once, I’m done, why draw it again,” don’t do anything except cleanup on computer just draw start to finish on paper, it’s so self-indulgent/non-commercial I can call it “art practice” & maybe not fuss over making it perfect)

I know I haven’t bought art supplies in a few years (been working mostly digitally) but uh, Prismacolor no longer sells individual markers? They only sell individual Col-Erase pencils in 2 colors? EVERY refillable pen I’ve bought has been discontinued, or they no longer sell the ink?? What the heck

Genres aren't real. They are mental projections we impose on stories to simplify the way talk about and sell them but stories come unshaped from deep within us and writers shouldn't feel constrained by or even respect genres at all. The story comes first.
