We’re pleased to share a draft of our paper, “Contractual Override: How Private Contracts Undermine the Goals of the Copyright Act for Libraries and Researchers, and What We Can Do About It”. We are especially grateful to @rachaelgs.bsky.social for co-authoring this paper with us.
Contractual Override: How Private Contracts Undermine the Goals of the Copyright Act for Libraries and Researchers, and What We Can Do About It
We’ve written before about the use of contracts limiting author’s access to fair use, including how publisher contracts restrict innovation by undermining scholarly AI research.  Though contra…

If there is a chance of saving the remnants of representative democracy we will have to do some things. Texas Dems are doing some things. Stand with them. Here’s a very good piece by @lonestarleft.com. www.lonestarleft.com/p/we-will-no...

They say you need a good elevator pitch to run for office.

Well, here's mine. My name is Taylor Wettach, and I'm a 7th-generation Iowan. I quit my job as a lawyer after my law firm caved to Trump. Now, I'm running for Congress to flip Iowa's 1st and take back the House.

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job
This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake

Joe Biden was right to pardon his son. Trump pardoned his criminal co-conspirators. He's gonna pardon terrorists. ENTIRELY MISS ME with your dumb arguments about how Democrats must follow rules Republicans ignore.

OF COURSE Joe Biden Was Right to Pardon His Son
People need to stop asking Democrats to play by different rules than Republicans, and they need to stop asking Biden to be a worse father than any of us would be in his place.

I will be at CNI next week discussing our forthcoming licensing guidebook (being published by the Association of Research Libraries). We'll be focusing on how the guidebook helps libraries license content in ways that protect computational research, AI training, and other fair uses.

NEW: Private schools across the South that were established for white children during desegregation are now benefiting from tens of millions in taxpayer dollars flowing from rapidly expanding voucher-style programs, a @propublica analysis found.

The truth of Covid in the US, namely that we had refrigerator trucks full of bodies driving around New York City and buried people three deep and more than .5% of all people over 65 *just died* while the president encouraged his idiot minions to beat up old Korean ladies, is too much for many people
just a weird level of unreality where the pandemic lockdowns are cast as the equivalent of The Factory Closed To Save The Spotted Owls and not "hospitals were on the brink of collapse because so many people were getting sick and dying at once of the disease we don't have a treatment of vaccine for"
