My favourite Jilly Cooper story is recounted in Graham Hoyland's 2013 book Last Hours on Everest. What a trooper.
"We lay in a tent for three days in a blizzard. After the first morning we had each told our life stories, and we lay there gazing at the roof of the tent, wondering what to do next.

Luckily Mark had brought a copy of Jilly Cooper's Rivals, a breathily written romance, and Brice had a penknife. We carefully cut it up into three parts. Mark, as owner, was allowed to read it in sequence: A, B, then C. Brice got B, C, then A, but I - as the youngest - was lumbered with C, A, then B, and struggled to comprehend both the plot and the characters.

On our return Mark contacted Jilly Cooper and told her the story. She was delighted to have been able to satisfy three large men at once with only one book."

Hector for #MosaicMonday?

Very little is known about this mosaic including the provenance, but the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna offers a tentative date of C1st–C2nd CE and the tantalising hint that this may be part of a Trojan War cycle depicting Hector.

Mosaic depicts five warriors. The left-most figure appears to be able to throw a javelin with his shield raised in his other hand. He is seemingly watched by three others who stand ready but not about to throw anything. A fifth figure can be seen about to take action though the nature of the action is not clear.

As we move into Winter proper. A final look at summer 👀

Lullingstone floor mosaic depicts the mythical figure of Summer wearing a garland of corn.

Lullingstone Roman Villa is a villa built during the Roman occupation of Britain, situated in Lullingstone near the village of Eynsford in Kent, south-eastern England. The villa is located in the Darent Valley, along with six others, including those at Crofton, Crayford and Dartford. Constructed in the 1st century, perhaps around AD 80–90, the house was repeatedly expanded and occupied until it was destroyed by fire in the 4th or 5th century. The villa was occupied over various periods within the Romano-British period, but after its destruction, it is only thought to have been reoccupied during the medieval period. The occupants were most likely wealthy Romans or native Britons who had adopted Roman customs.

Here I am in 2020 in the flimsiest, most pitful PPE - like so many other NHS staff, some of whom died from the Covid they caught in their hospitals.

Tory peer Michelle Mone - who today lost her legal case & must repay the govt £122m - dares to claim she’s been ‘scapegoated’.

What, Michelle? 🧵

Ok, Aeneid discourse time because the statement below is correct, but also, I think, significantly incomplete in ways that understate how good Vergil is as an author (he is very good).

Aeneas is supposed to be a self-righteous prig because Vergil is deeply ambivalent about the Augustan project.

Virgil wrote FanFic.

And while parts of his epic are very good, Aeneas himself comes across as a self-righteous prig.
