"Today we are holding a carnival, to which everyone has to bring a partner wearing some form of disguise, so that one man will be dressed up as a bear, another as a savage, and so on and so forth."

Glad you enjoyed it.

It was fun to "research", although Trump's anti-Lula tariffs wreaked havoc with my caipirinha budget for the project!

Alas, the Museum was closed when I visited in February...and looked like it has been for quite a while

Even after all this time, Mr. Ellis still thrills to discover iterations of Barroso’s anthem. Recently, he introduced the audience to an arrangement from “an old time Japanese singer named Tomoko Takara”. He also speaks fondly of recordings by The Coasters, Josephine Baker, and Johnny Mathis.

🎵I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes!🎶

I have not, but it sounds intriguing.

When I first moved to NY from Massachusetts, I lived in Staten Island where nightlife was all but non-existent, so the EV was my usual stomping ground. But since moving to Brooklyn (and noe, working remotely full time) I hardly ever go into Manhattan!

I actually remember seeing this when it originally aired on the show --- my first exposure to the song.

Years later, when I moved to NYC, relatives stayed at the hotel. But alas, it had already begun its long descent into seediness by then.
