I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

It's the size of a folded business card. Print it, fold it, put it in your wallet!
Agghh this makes me so sad. The ruby community was so special and now it has been functionally taken over by techno fascists (DHH, Shopify). How can we build and sustain open source infrastructure that isn’t beholden to capitalism?
Imagine if the US had just rebranded universal healthcare as a “loyalty program” like frequent flier miles. You earn ”health points” for every day you live in the US that you can spend on “health rewards”. People would eat that shit up
El Poblenou necesita un nombre “hip”. ¿Te gusta “PoNo?”
I love to see this! I also love that anywhere I am in Barcelona, I can usually hail a taxi quickly. It was sad to see the death of taxis in Chicago and frustrating to find a cab in Chicago only to have the driver refuse to use the meter and charge Uber rates

Ride-hailing services will slowly disappear in Barcelona due to new taxi law

Either I’m really grounding into the Spanish speed of life or I’m just old because I’m really into this downtempo/balearic beat
The real solution to time travel paradoxes
In The Jetsons they never explain why this white family had to move up into a towering sky apartment zoom around in their flying cars. What did they leave behind on the ground? Was it the fallout and wreckage of a nuclear war or just redlining and suburban sprawl?

I honestly liked the look of Sagrada Familia better without the central spire when I saw it 13y ago
I saw a man wander out into a bike lane while looking at his phone and get run over by a cyclist on a bicing. This happened 7m from me. I'm pretty sure he will have a concussion. Be careful out there! I think that goes double for cyclists. They are the ones with the most "power" in these situations

"It is important that the EU doesn't yield on tech regulation because this [issue] is so fundamentally close to all aspects related to sovereignty and would create a dangerous precedent."
Despite the recent US-EU #trade talks, digital #taxes and #tech rules are still a flashpoint — Washington threatens retaliation while Brussels stands firm. Glad I could contribute to this Deutsche Welle piece.

Digital taxes put US-EU trade talks under pressure – DW – 09/01/2025
Trump is now threatening retaliation over EU tech rules, shaking the bloc’s 15% tariff deal. Lacking China’s rare earths leverage, Brussels is scrambling for countermeasures — what cards can it still ...

Center/center-left strategy in Europe sees Denmark as a model on countering the right by going hardline on immigration while championing socialist policy. But can they really outflank the right? Interesting survey numbers too on European opinions on migration elpais.com/internaciona...

“Framed as a proverbial ‘kill switch’ by many in Brussels, the debate has shifted from whether it could be triggered to when. This, in turn, has prompted renewed calls by the EU and member states to advance the continent’s “technology sovereignty,” writes Trevor H. Rudolph.
A ‘Kill Switch’ Could Shutter Europe’s Access to US Tech. Here’s How. | TechPolicy.Press
Trevor H. Rudolph discusses European fears around the US government cutting off access to US tech and the policy tools that could make it happen.

It’s interesting to me how Spanish writing tells you so much about how to pronounce things. There’s ¿ which says “intone as a question” and ‘ which tells you which syllable to emphasize and ñ which tells you to pronounce it “ny”. English is just like “here are some letters good luck!”
I had one of these until the CCD went on the fritz and turned everything a shade of pink. It had a larger CCD which supposedly meant clearer photos plus a carl-zeiss lens and one of the first IR/laser auto focuses. Basically a higher grade point and shoot. But yeah the pivoting body was pretty silly
I love finding goofy little cameras at flea markets, like oh my god the early 2000s were wild. why did Sony make this.

I resent that I am still subjected to the audacity of busibody Americans spreading harmful misinfo even when living in Europe & from a stranger (she said we met at an event) in an unsolicited DM, too. 🤦

For the 1,000th time, you can still receive SSDI benefits while living abroad (in most cases).

This video from Fairmount Bagels in Montreal from their Instagram is the most impressive thing I've ever seen
As climate change gets worse, everyone should take a page out of Spain’s book. In the hottest weeks introduce shorter work weeks, entire months off. Reduce activity to keep people cool AND generate less CO2. Live in the present moment. Take a nap. Heal from capitalism.
