Not even remotely adequate, of course, but I tried to get some thoughts down about Rob Reiner
Rob Reiner’s Death Was a Tragedy. His Life Was the Opposite.
As impossible as it is to process the abrupt end to his life, Reiner always possessed a joy, curiosity, and affection that was imbued in his movies

Bluey is beloved. Halfbrick—yes, the Fruit Ninjas folks!—were tasked with turning it into a game. No pressure, right? Well, it helps to live down the street from Bluey's creator. My story at @crossplayblog.bsky.social on how the new (and good!) Bluey game was made www.crossplay.news/p/the-story-...
What It's Like to Make a Bluey Video Game

I do wonder if we're mistake YouTube self-promo shorts for actual YouTube. Like, people still want the actual podcast more than the YouTube video.

Charlie's show is great. I'm sure it has a ton of listeners. The YouTube numbers are tiny by comparison. The real numbers are in the promo shorts.
tried to get into a lot of this in our ep about why everyone's becoming a youtuber now (conveniently on youtube, srry) www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzFg...

For The New Yorker’s Cartoons & Puzzles issue, I wrote about Stephen Sondheim’s lifelong obsession with games and puzzles, and a delightful new book about it called "Matching Minds with Sondheim." This was the most fun I had writing anything all year. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
Stephen Sondheim, Puzzle Maestro
For the late Broadway composer, crafting crosswords and treasure hunts was as thrilling as writing musicals.

Critical Reflex is one of the most fascinating publishers in games

They have the quality and cadence of Panic

They have the style of the early days Devolver

But their ability to spot games that *say something* AND *have a hook that could elevate above the game deluge* is uniquely their own

Okay so I had one more thing to talk about at Exalclaw before 2025 ended — Demonschool!! I still haven't finished the game bc I dont want to rush it, but couldn't wait to chat about Namako. She's pretty damn cool for how she's grown to handle bullying:

Demonschool’s Namako Is A Model Student For Showing How To Resist Bullies
Namako would likely prefer helping someone with a photojournalism class, but that doesn’t make her any less wise when it comes to bullies.

The Roottrees are Dead had a bit of a moment this year so you've probably heard of it already, but the attention is well-earned. A document exploration game that spans an entire century of a family's history and drama that really captures that research feel. It's also got a great tiered hint system.
