I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.

Our neighbors hired this crew to clear the weeds out of their yard, and every kid on the block thinks this is the Best Day Ever.

This is incredibly disappointing. The so-called “mechanics” - like research and structure and brainstorming - are literally how writers craft, how they find the way into the work and make it weird, make it theirs. Without that crucial stuff, you’re trying to find emotional truth where there is none

Post to the subreddit r/AskHistorians: What was navigation like for vehicle drivers in the United States before the internet and GPS? Before GPS devices and smartphones/cellular internet networks were a thing (Garmin company was founded 1989), millions of Americans were already getting around driving without the use of those inventions. How did they navigate? Did everyone need stacks of maps? Were drivers frequently lost? Did everyone have to understand the interstate system and use intuition to guide them? How burdensome was driving before GPS? Did drivers pay people to calculate an optimal route for them?
