14th October 1939: Sinking of HMS Royal Oak. Shortly after midnight, U-47 under Kapitänleutnant Gunther Prien managed to enter the Royal Navy anchorage at Scapa Flow through Kirk Sound, which had not yet been secured by a blockship.

Prewar photograph of U-47 - the identity number on the conning tower was removed at the outbreak of war. The image shows a German U-Boat running on the surface in choppy coastal waters. A number of the crew are in the conning tower or immediately aft of it on the casing.

Yeah, and considering most English people are like me (ie I have schoolboy French which is impossible to undestand with my northern accent) then why on earth are we penalising people who almost certainly can speak more languages than we can

October 14th, 1938. First flight of the Curtiss-Wright XP-40, prototype of the P-40 Warhawk. Known in British/Dominion/Empire and Soviet service as the Tomahawk or Kittyhawk (depending on variant) the P-40 saw extensive service on all fronts, particularly in the early war years.

The XP-40 on its first flight over Buffalo, New York. At this point, the aircraft’s only armament was two cowling-mounted 0.50 calibre machine guns, but this changed on production examples.
