"The lost era of Netlabels" - I saw someone say that on Reddit and immediately felt a lump in my throat. Those were good times - tons of questionable mastering and terrible cover art, but also a whole universe of genuinely interesting music.

Anyone remember Harsh Noise Wally? 🔊

Rejected cover art - the label guys (cc @strategictaper.bsky.social) did not understand that true art is meant to be provocative and get you out of your aesthetic comfort zone.

I’m buying this theory 💯
My little theory is, AC/DC sounded the most dangerous before they got their iconic logo - it's the pre-branding period.

Another performance by The Rita that has to be seen to be believed - at one point he puts on a diving mask and dunks his head in a tub of water, triggering the sound through a contact mic. Harsh noise doesn't get much more... committed than this. youtu.be/TD39L-6SPrY

This footage of a Hijokaidan performance at a Kyoto university from 1981 (!) is just incredible. "Total mayhem" doesn't even begin to describe it - for educational purposes only. youtu.be/u3Zxp0izwzI

I love the weird chaotic energy of Tangerine Dream's early material - Alpha Centauri sounds like cosmic ritual music for alien encounters. 👽

Legend has it there's a Phirnis tape with a hidden shoegaze karaoke cover of this German country song on it - the title translates to "Hey boss, I need more money".

Love this Boiler Room footage of Christian Fennesz from a couple of years ago - always one of the most brilliant performers in experimental music. youtu.be/PFwYf083rJc

Check out @xtelyonrec.bsky.social's Special Hour 65: Synthopia, featuring a track off the latest Phrnis release, The Gateway Tape on @strategictaper.bsky.social. I'm a huge fan of the Massive Attack song, btw - this is good company.

I've got around 50 half-hour improv sessions recorded with my trio band (electronics, guitar, drums). We never release anything, but if we ever do, it'll be a massive box set - no edits, no band name, just the whole mess in one place.
