I don’t write long-form stuff much anymore, but today is an exception. If you know me, you know exactly why that is.

Had Dan Quinn not challenged (and won) a DeAndre Swift 1-yard completion and won early in the CHI/WAS game, I would’ve lost.

I’ve already drawn magic 100 times. Doing the busy/dull work early because stupid RPG systems are stupid.

Why am I playing this? Hell if I know. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment. Or maybe I wanted to see if it was as awful as I remembered.

We take this kind of thing for granted now, as most people walk around with supercomputers that can easily emulate this kind of stuff without breaking a sweat… but, back in the mid-90s, the world was a LOT different.

I quickly bought an AC adapter, as buying batteries by the bushel became untenable, but that damaged the portability factor a bit.

Despite the power problems, though, the Nomad sure did make good on its concept. Playing NHL 96 & Skitchin’ on the go, at the time, was wizardry.

The SEGA Nomad is 30 years old this month.

I bought one in 1996, less than a year after launch, as the concept of having a portable Genesis was very cool.

But man… that thing destroyed batteries in record time. Six batteries for two hours of portable gameplay. Whew.

Those November 1st tariff spikes will make the holiday season that much more complicated for retailers, who will likely have to post another round of price hikes for video game hardware & accessories.

It’s probably not wise to assume the President will back down. That’s no given.

Even if retailers remain “committed” to console sales, there’s a lot of recent smoke coming from claims (and photos) of stores removing/reconfiguring displays.

People are claiming it’s an overall reduction of video game inventory in stores, not just Xbox stuff. That would point to a larger problem.

It doesn’t help that Microsoft really has no remaining credibility, since the company has gone back on so many things it once said.

Pretty easy to get traction on stories about possible retailer removal of Xbox hardware when the tide of public sentiment is staunchly against the brand.

Dang it, I miss the Resistance games, too. Oh, and the first Uncharted game. And, yeah, Metal Gear Solid 4— despite the eons-long install time.

If I had to choose one, I’d still pick Xbox 360 over PS3– but both platforms were good in their own ways. Multiplats on X360, PS3 exclusives.

Oh, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. I remember being so excited to see this at E3, only to come away from my time with it going, “What the hell was this?”

This was repeated the following year with whatever-the-heck SoulCalibur V was.

Just saw a mention of graded video games on my timeline and it reminds me of a secondary reason why I buy and open sealed games:

If it’s opened and played, video game grading assholes have one less copy to imprison in plastic while completely misunderstanding the purpose of a game: TO PLAY IT.

I’m seeing PS3 mentions on my timeline and now am thinking about one of my favorite games for the platform:

PAIN.

I know Goat Simulator does the ragdoll thing really well, but PAIN was unabashed, self-injurious chaos. I genuinely love the game and miss it a lot.

Chances are, though, that the only way I can truly rid myself of being bullied into online play and subscriptions is to dive into my non-connected consoles.

While I’d like to keep using my Series X often, I’m not liking the constant ads and begs because I’m not donating money to GamePass.

I’m curating my Series X library of installed games to focus solely on solo games with little to (preferably) no online hooks after Sonic Racing threw online in my face with an unsolicited begging for GamePass subscriptions. (Which is why I deleted the game.)

RPGs seem to make the most sense.

So… the Metaphor strategy guide is freaking MASSIVE. I ordered it on a whim because it was on sale, and the game’s been just sitting on my Series X hard drive for awhile— so I thought it might inspire me to give it another shot.

But holy cow— this is actually quite intimidating.

One thing on my to-do-at-some-point list is to file my new/sealed copies into my shelves so that, when I want to play that game, I’m going to need to open it up.

Getting new/sealed games now isn’t about opening them on camera, but rather having very fresh copies to play/enjoy.

Grateful for an extra day off coming tomorrow. Not sure which video games I’ll play, but I intend on spending the time playing.

Also grateful for an upcoming short week, as the job is rapidly aging me.

The hardware is the problem. Distributing hardware is a trickier beast given distribution channels along with financial risks in console hardware development and pains if unit sales fall short.

Microsoft can still remain as a third-party publisher and support PC/Switch/PlayStation.
