Joined a Zoom today and the first thing I heard was someone saying in mid-conversation, "I guess a pig castrator is better than a dog shooter." Which says a lot about our current state of politics.

Heard the garbage truck and threw on my coat and shoes to rush out to the alley to thank the garbage worker for working during the brutal cold this week. She gave me the biggest smile. Thank a service worker today.

I keep thinking of the sense of creeping despair in the court of Meduseld, of Eomer being sent away by Grima Wormtongue because Eomer dared to urge that darkness be resisted, and of Eowyn telling Grima, “Your words are poison.” That is what today feels like.
