To describe a Dartford warbler to someone partially sighted, focus on its distinctive features: a long tail often held cocked, a dark, grey-brown body, and a prominent red eye-ring. Emphasize its scratchy, rambling song, and mention its tendency to sit on top of gorse bushes, which is the best place to hear its call. It's a small bird, about \(12-13\) cm long, with a long tail that it often cocks jauntily. It has a slate-grey or grey-brown head, back, and wings, but its chest is a deep, wine-red or russet colour. A very distinctive, bright red eye-ring and a long, dark tail are its key visual markers. The male may have a small white patch on its belly. Legs are bright orange.

I can't help but feel that ducks delight in pulling off a flawless water-ski landing. This male mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) was a split-second from touching down when I photographed him in Albuquerque on December 6, 2025.

Much of the image is a square of blue water with tiny gentle ripples. A male mallard is perhaps three inches above the water as it comes in for a landing. Its beak is bright yellow and its head and upper neck are bright green. There's a white "collar" (ring") between the upper neck and the dark lower neck. The bird's visible flank is light gray. The photo shows the underside of one wing, which is white to light gray. The tail is mostly white. The startlingly orange legs and feet are reflected in the water.
