The more physical act of horror there versus the psychological was due to wanting to make the gameplay feel different than past games. Hence more combat. More real gore. Also the SG people were desperate and psychotic. In the scene before this, Curtis - a junk man - talks about “his purpose.”

Hmm.. my best recollection is that when we created Curtis, everyone really liked the character and wanted him to take a larger role. How we ended up writing a torture scene not sure but it felt like something Curtis would do. If anything it was more influenced by City Of The Living Dead.

Silent Hill Homecoming messed up by trying to copy SH2's twist and, in the process, invalidates the justifications of core parts of the game play and makes the story lamer. Seeing an actual veteran with severe PTSD have to deal with SH would be awesome but that's not what this is.
