Former podcast guy, now I do other stuff.

he/him

Babylon 5 and Red October enthusiast.
My partners sister got me a horseradish start for Christmas last year, and today I finally harvested the first bit.

If it's half as sharp and spicy as it smells it's going to be a potent horseradish!

I spent the week dragging myself forward with work while I got over that nasty head cold going around.

Well, I'm back up and running, and as a treat we're going out to see one of my favourite bands!

Finally watching Stranger Things season 4 and it's wild how accurately thry capture the high school experience, after all "high school kids get bullied, fight each other and play D&D" is basically everyone's high school experience right?

Right?

In @translink.ca budget discussions, and frankly we don’t talk enough about how Metro Vancouver is the 25th largest metro area in Canada/USA, but has the 3rd highest transit ridership. This is a massive success we sometimes take for granted.

This is a weirdly specific and pedantic post:

People should begin wearing poppies starting on the last Friday in October through to Remembrance Day.

Wearing it today feels performative rather than respectful.

Going to see a movie I adored as a teenager in a real movie theater shortly.

Groovy.

Shop Smart, shop S-Mart

Evil Dead 2.

I'm subjecting my partner to it too, she doesn't like gore, but I've promised it's funny gore?

Can't wait to see if it holds up.

Sometimes being an activist can feel defeating.

But then I remember that humpback whales were considered so endangered that an entire Star Trek movie was made about them in the 80s.

Now, because of the work of thousands, humpbacks are now a classified as a ‘species of least concern’.

At the Vic Theatre for Donnie Darko tonight and I think every single person in the theatre was born within five years of me.

Vancouver's TransLink is a rare success story in North American transit, with ridership almost matching pre-Covid levels. It might be the only big 🇺🇸/🇨🇦 agency that has *expanded* total bus service since 2019.

I spoke w/CEO Kevin Quinn about lessons from TransLink's rapid recovery. 🧵
The Secret to Vancouver’s Public Transit Ridership Recovery
The Canadian city’s transit agency, TransLink, bounced back from Covid even as other North American systems have struggled. Its leader explains why riders returned.

Thing I miss most about when MEC was good?

Having reasonable things at good prices. I need new a cycling ankle pants clip, in days of yore they'd have a bin of them for $4 each.

They have one they stock now and it's $30

I just want a Velcro strap for my ankle. That shouldn't cost $30.

Apparently if you try to live properly and get a full night's sleep, work out 3-4 times a week, keep your apartment clean, cook your meals, and maybe try to see friends 1-2 times a week, that takes up pretty much all your time outside of work.

Gen. Wayne Eyre on Paul Wells' podcast said he doesn't like the phrase "warrior culture"

Warriors are undisciplined rabble that gets beaten by soldiers. The professional soldier is not a warrior, they are a professional at the skill at arms.

Warrior ethos is idiot bro-brained stupidity.
WAPO SCOOP: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of generals to travel on short notice from around the world to hear him make a speech on military standards and the “warrior ethos,” multiple people familiar with the event told The Washington Post.

New details emerge on Hegseth’s unusual mass gathering of top brass
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has summoned hundreds of generals for what is expected to be a short lecture on the “warrior ethos.” But top brass is bracing for possible firings or demotions.

At HARPERS FERRY?!?

Literally where a man sparked the civil war by attempting to start a slave revolt with the goal of ending slavery in America???
"At Harpers Ferry, staff flagged more than 30 signs...that highlight information potentially in violation of Trump’s policy. They include signs referring to racial discrimination and the hostility of White people to people who were formerly enslaved." www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
