One of the amazing assets that DC gave Mayfair was a photocopy of 3,000 pages of notes. Interns had been assigned to read every DC periodical from 1938 onward, and to summarize the stories, including powers and effects used by the characters. I read through the notes over and over. I spent months filling better than four notebooks with my estimates of characters power types and levels, and how much variance these characters had. Along the way I learned that Superman casually returned a stolen sun to an alien race, a western heroine had ricocheted a single shot to take out eight bad guys surrounding her, Robin could survive a pummeling from a savage mob one story then get knocked unconscious with a single slap the next, and Batman faced a villain whose ability was eyes at the end of his fingers. Okay, so maybe that last one I was not going to try to simulate.
