Read a reddit comment section by mistake of a post asking why people like Guilty Gear more than BlazBlue and the amount of comments using "anime" as an adjective sums up why I can't trust westerners to have meaningful conversations about Eastern media. Nobody made a comment that can be localized.

youtuber who does old console ROMhacks for a hobby: i made the n64 do raytracing just to see if i could and it does five thousand FPS or something

triple-A game studio: if you're experiencing stuttering on the lowest settings, consider just not being poor? your graphics card is five months old??

guy whose mission is to defend corporations: nooooo you don't understand, it's not a fair comparison because the youtube guy is doing small-scale experiments motivated by an in-depth understanding of the hardware, while triple-A studios have a scope set by executives who don't know anything!

Every "debate a vegan at a college campus" video I watch involves the animal hater using blatant eugenics or ableism to explain why non-human animals can't be considered people or of equal moral value ijbol

(I'm mentally handicapped so yes I got a pass to say it makes me think of ableism)

Getting stuck causes players to explore the world.

Dying causes players to think about what they're doing.

An "impossible" situation causes players to learn how the game works and eventually achieve the impossible.

We need to be able to design *some* games around these fundamental ideas.

Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.

Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

I wonder how big the Qian Jin fanbase would be if Link Click was released in the 2000's.
I wonder how big the Tohru Adachi fanbase would be if Persona 4 was released in the 2020's.

A regular Waddle Dee being playable in Air Riders in addition to Bandana Dee seems like a gag addition but I don’t think it can be understated; Waddle Dee is probably more popular than 90% of gaming characters in Japan right now

As much as I don't really care for AniKirby, the Fumu-tan scene is quite possibly the most failed media literacy test.

Seeing discourse from afar on whether Otome games should allow you to select your protagonist's gender is interesting. I see "Well what if we asked for a female protag in BL games huh??" but really, in both genres, most of the time the protagonist is an actual character instead of a blank state.

i take frenzy damage every time i see someone go "well i just use it for the boring stuff". what are you TALKING about? if it's boring or unimportant, why are you putting it in? NPC dialogue is fertile ground for worldbuilding, creating verisimilitude, conveying important information, and hijinks!!
Buy a solo indie dev's game because I want to support them.

Find out it uses OpenAI to write "non-important NPC dialogue".

A thing about that Horses blacklist is that you may find the scene they cut and replaced distasteful but we're literally setting a bar here that the TV show South Park couldn't clear.

liking game genres that spawned from the arcades condemns you to forever suffer cuz no one outside of the bubble gets it and every developer wants to the appeal to the guy who doesn't get it

The Japanese version of Pokemon Emerald had an item in the Safari Zone that was impossible to obtain because it mistakenly placed inside the wall. This was fixed in the localization.

This Bulbapedia screencap explains in more detail. (Also, not to brag but I was the one who submitted this info!)

The existence of a genre of lesbians who like bishounen anime and BL suggests a genre of gay men who like bishoujo anime and yuri should also exist, yet most people will say they don't. I think in spirit they do, they just discovered T***** S***t before bishoujo anime.

Realized how few BL games are actually romance simulators as opposed to dialogue option text adventures.

I think as far as the Eastern side goes, the PS Vita ports Gakuen Heaven might be the only BL games that play something like, say, Tokimeki Memorial?

In Blazblue, the character Platinum the Trinity has a jab where they do either rock, paper or scissors

This makes no difference in almost all situations EXCEPT when they are fighting another Platinum. If they both jab each other at the same time, the "winner" gets the hit

This has been bothering me a lot lately, but on a broader scope. People are afraid to be original. Critiques are all the same, jokes are copy/pasted, opinions use a handful of buzzwords that don't actually describe anything. It's like drowning in a sea of masks that all wear the same face.
One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

I would love to tier list all the Kirby boss rushes on difficulty based on playing as Normal Kirby but unfortunately Super Star hates Normal Kirby and playing The Arena ability-less isn't fun.

Honestly funny to see a few people going "Shut up Adeleine, Ribbon, and Kirby 64 fans! You got Zero Two in Air Riders!" When Air Riders's Zero Two does nothing recognizably Zero Two-y in the fight that it might as be an OC at this point.

Reviews of the Dark Matter trilogy Kirby games and the Sonic Advance trilogy on the internet are honestly a shining example of the discrepancy of "playing a game to beat it vs playing it to have fun" and how binge culture and internet review mentality can ruin a game.
