Wrote myself up a post on my (often disused) painting and wargaming blog to organize my thoughts and lay our an actionable plan for responsible hobbying in 2025. TLDR: buy less, paint more, play more.

Figuring Out 2025 Plans
So first thing's first - I haven't done any gaming lately. Haven't gotten my army to the game store for Warhammer: The Old World. Kind of.....

I’m going to guess four kittens.

Jungle bases painted. Once that dries I’ll flock them, and then I can start hot-gluing various bits of plastic flora into place.

That’s right, but it was someone different organizing it? Not Boldo?

It’s not really a big wargaming con - I’ve seen a Frostgrave table do well, along with Burrows & Badgers and a little bit of Bolt Action. There used to be a 40K tournament hosted at the con but not in years. So a smaller demo, something that can be played fast, is probably a wiser option.

As much as I’d like to put on a game on a big, detailed table, I think I should probably prioritize something I can comfortably carry from my AirBnB to the student union regardless of weather.

Running GAGG, held at SUNY Geneseo, is my “home” gaming convention and 2026 marks 20 years since I started attending (I missed it in 2014 but otherwise have perfect attendance). I haven’t tried demoing a wargame there since 2006, but I’m burned out on TTRPGs at present.

Let me state this as clearly as I can:

It is not the job of a historian to make you feel good about your nation’s past.

We need to print this on t-shirts and bumper stickers.

I’m deeply, deeply grateful. I’ve learned so much following you, and I wouldn’t have gotten that if you were buttoned down.

I’ve written two novels that while I’m proud of them both, I’ve chosen not to publish. First would smell of brimstone, sweat, leather, cheeseburgers and whiskey. Second would be bonfires, cinnamon, dark chocolate, rum and sweat.

What would *your* book smell like if you engaged in a mega weirdo scented pages promotional campaign?

Eternal vigilance against squirrels and the feral cats who wander through our garden.

Poppy will stop, regard his tail for a moment, then attack it, pull himself over into a flip other, then stop to again stare at his tail contemplatively, and then launch a renewed assault. Or ass-ault, as the case may be.

Maybe more that I just wanna put a junkyard on the table?

I think just a final wash and doing the bases and that’ll be it for these.

thoughts, prayers, ko-fi, orders via the shop all very much appreciated!

Praising me for taking extra efforts to protect the immunocompromised while in the same breath proudly announcing that she won’t do the bare minimum to protect others is unfortunately pretty par for the course with her.

Last time I attended one of these quarterly meetings, one of my coworkers commended me for masking to protect my wife, then launched into the story of how she refused the shingles vaccine, got a painful case of shingles, but still would not get any vaccinations going forward.

It would be one thing if I was confident my coworkers washed their hands and covered their mouths when sneezing and if my wife wasn’t immunocompromised, but sadly I know they don’t and she is. And fuck three hours of bingo for mini candy bars.

Terrible night’s sleep and the neighbor’s dogs goaded the local skunk into spraying again in the pre-dawn hours. So glad I scheduled myself off so I don’t need to make a two hour commute for a meeting that’s going to be 3 hours of forced socialization.

Yeah, pretty soon it’s going to be time to just prep for the winter months.

Tonight’s painting efforts: wrecked cars are 3D prints, glued to MDF terrain bases and gussied up with some Mantic TerrainCrate bits. Barricades are Mantic. Not done but close!
