Here's a line from the piece Jenkins posted, by the way: "Weiss; her wife, Nellie Bowles; and her sister, Suzy Weiss, are the founders of The Free Press and close friends of mine..."

So since the move to the Atlantic Jenkins has said Charlie Kirk "argued with civility" and now this huh

This is really smart. Amazed at the hysteria over the ascendance of a woman entrepreneur who clearly knows how to cover and sell news and who's not afraid to take on a mob. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

If Major League Soccer doesn’t care enough to watch their own games in order to write about them, why should we watch their games?

As someone whose time freelancing for MLSsoccer was a vital step in my career progression, and someone who generally gleans insight from the observations of others:

This sucks so hard.
MLS is using generative AI to write match recaps. Writers used to get paid freelance rates to do that. Hssssss.

This piece isn't about tennis, but there's a line in here, "is it possible to win all the time and preserve some sense of joy and spontaneity?" and thanks to Carlos Alcaraz I think definitely yes. www.newyorker.com/sports/sport...
The Kansas City Chiefs Are Depressing
The team’s vibes might change if they start winning, and they usually do. But is it possible to win all the time without losing joy and spontaneity?

As for Djokovic loving the process...he's played an incredibly light schedule this year and didn't exactly seem to relish his time on court at many of the tournaments he did play. That could be why he's still going, but with the constant physical issues I think there's probably more to it.
owensports.bsky.social
I'm sure everyone late in their career is playing with pain to some extent, but with Djokovic it seems particularly visceral and constant at this point. Every tournament is ending with at least a minor injury, eventually there'll be something worse. But his Shanghai matches just looked like hell.
owensports.bsky.social
Not necessarily! But Djokovic's time on court in Shanghai particular looked deeply unpleasant to me -- vomiting, collapsing to the court, various tweaks and injuries, etc -- and I just struggle to rationalize someone putting themselves through that if they're not wedded to the lifestyle.

Heartbreaking reading, but this Reddit thread gives a sense of the relentlessness of the horror inflicted by ICE, and the damage being done to so many innocent people that doesn't make the news.

Him continuing to play strikes me either as a grieving period from the Sinner/Alcaraz stuff, after which he'll retire, or addiction to the sport that overpowers the attendant agonies. Not sure which is more depressing. He's completed the sport, yet it's not finished with him.
owensports.bsky.social
Belated Djokovic thought -- I was already struck by him taking uncompetitive losses to Sinner and Alcaraz on the chin, but playing a tournament only to puke repeatedly, get hurt again, and eventually lose to the world No. 204 just seems like a miserable time.

Me, waking up to see Sabalenka up 2-0 in the third: I'll watch the rest of this match before going back to bed, this will be fun.

Me after the match: unsure if I will ever sleep again

This is the equivalent of a tennis set in which one player is holding easily and the other is digging out of love-40 holes every game (translation: the Tigers have nine fucking lives goddamn)

I learned this week that The Internet Archive still has pages up from my favorite defunct tennis website, The Changeover, and have since spent several hours happily reading. Thanks to them!

That vision still drives the Internet Archive in 2025: building a reliable memory for a digital age that forgets too quickly.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.
