You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

Twenty-seven years ago today, (10/12/18) Matthew Shepard died 5 days after being beaten, pistol whipped, tortured, robbed and left to die tied to a wooden fence post outside of Laramie, Wyoming because he was gay.

Tied to a fence like a scarecrow.

Today is National Coming Out Day - and the last day for Banned Book Week - "Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe is an autobiographical graphic novel, which explores coming out to the family as nonbinary. It has been highly criticized by religious conservatives since it was published in 2019.
