My fluffy black cat likes to be picked up and carried around (for a couple minutes anyway). She tucks her head under my chin when I do so.

She's an ass like 70% of the time but also I'd kill for her. You know what I mean.

"It is hopeless. My skin is fused to the cold, metal slab. Instruments of silver and red glare at me. But this is what I wanted, isn't it? Maybe it was just what they told me I wanted. The doctor tells me to breathe deep. I just hope they'll love me when I wake up."

I think dehumanization is less about the loss of body or will or mind. It's about how others treat you. You could be completely unchanged, but if the people around you, if society, decides you're not human, then isn't that far more dehumanizing than replacing body with machine?
[Moon entity. Observed. Depth distance. Calculated. Organic material: satisfactory.]

I would love to explore the dehumanization of trans people through industrial horror. So much of society paints us as evil, groomers, body mutilators, simultaneously a powerful group with an agenda and weak 'fakes'. So much more I could say but not enough characters.
[Grafting. In progress. Conveyor attachments. Plugged. Mining extraction. Tools. Inserted.]
[Spinal chord. Interwoven. Cranial examination. Reactivated.]

Hello! I'm Opal, I write horror, gothic romance, fantasy, and sci fi. Industrial horror of the future is by far the scarier, in my opinion. There's something to be said for dark, gritty factories, but the shiny polish of futuristic tech as a thin veneer over evil is intense.
[Organic Material. Booted. Nerve System. Controller Liquids. Injected.]

[Material responsive. Cranial activity. Under control.]

[Inquiry. Required for completion: TELL US, WHO YOU ARE, WHAT DO YOU WRITE, AND WHAT INDUSTRIAL HORROR IS SCARIER? OF THE PAST, OR OF THE FUTURE?]

900 words in 45 minutes, interrupted only to devour the delicious dinner my spouse made for me.

This Polytrix/Mira Angst super queer fanfic is now at 2200 words. Why do I feel silly for even writing it?

You’re kidnapped. The characters from the last show you watched are coming to rescue you.

I will be rescued but I may be turned into a fish.

I have never written fanfic in my life. Nothing against it, I've just always focused on my original works.

Last night I wrote an outline for a K-pop Demon Hunters fanfic. I shouldn't work on it, I have enough to write, but I want to.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we honor all those who we lost due to anti-trans violence and society's cruelty towards trans people.

Tell a trans person you love them. Today. Now. Before it's too late. Stand up for us. Protect us. Nobody else will.

It’s a good day to talk about women scientists. Let’s also remember Margaret W. Rossiter, who died in August of this year.

She coined the “Matilda Effect” (named after suffragist Matilda Gage), which describes bias against acknowledging women’s achievements.

My chisel cracks the seal open. Only then, did I understand the folly of my curiosity. A face slowly lifts, eyes squinting in the light of my flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. Then another. And another.

Thousands. There are thousands, and I'd just woken them all.
I knew you all were fine additions to our Collegiate. Here – an ancient scroll, on which a sentence has been carved, and you must finish it: “My chisel cracks the seal open. Only then, did I understand the folly of my curiosity.” Continue it as you see fit, my friends.

No truth, terrible or otherwise, should be hidden from humanity.

Not one.

A terrible truth that I wish more people would accept: Most people are one bad day from total destruction, and it is almost always the fault of Capitalism. There are better ways, they just require work.
A moment; let me note this. The Primrose Collegiate appreciates your honesty and insight. Hm, an explosion? Yes, a seal is being pried open tonight. Now, listen carefully; what IS a Terrible Truth to you? What must be hidden from Humanity, lest it destroys us?

An ideal seal containing a terrible truth would, more than likely, be incredibly intricate and complicated, require a dangerous quest and a difficult sacrifice to open.

But then, a seal containing a terrible truth should be easy to open. Many terrible truths need to be known.
Tonight’s attendance is most fortuitous, wouldn’t you agree? Mind the arcane energies coruscating in the laboratory; our work is, as always, dangerous. Now then, tell me; how would you describe an ideal seal containing a Terrible Truth? Where is it located?

Hey! I'm Opal, I write mostly horror and gothic romance.

As a trans woman, the seal I own that contains a terrible truth hidden from (most of) Humanity is the seal on my bottle of estrogen. It whispers that you can change what you cannot accept, no matter what they say.
Ah, good evening, friend. Dr. Bedlam, at your service. Our esoteric laboratory has just opened. Come in, we are doing vital work on studying the cosmic unknown. Tell us, what do you write, and what seal do you own that contains a Terrible Truth hidden from Humanity?

No book yet, but I'll brag about my WIPs.

Gothic vampire/cowboy lesbian romance sits at 35 pages.

Ghost story is currently sitting at 81 pages.

And I'm fending off the urge to start a new WIP, a dark modern fantasy about a group of punk teens who run into an eldritch horror.
Here's your cue, Horror Writers Chat folks. Shout out your books.

That's a tough question. I think very few fears have actually been 'forgotten', they've just evolved.

Not to get too political, but it would be nice if we could bring back the fear of greed as a sin. Too many people see wealth as an indicator of good morals.
Q4, and this is the last one for tonight. Hang around for the pimp your book part of the night in 10 minutes. Please do repost others. Please do go and repost one of Matt's books as well.
Thanks thanks.

I try to keep the old in my stories. I find it difficult to write about things like the horrors of modern day (ongoing genocides, climate change, AI taking over, etc.), it's all too real. Writing is my escape.

It's so much easier to deal with a vampire than it is capitalism.
So what does it say about us, as the folklore evolves, and we fear new things, in the dark...

Tons of folklore still resonate with me. Couldn't possibly pick just one. Tales of werewolves, vampires, ghosts, fae, and all sorts of creatures go back millennia.

I have considered getting a degree in folklore, just for the knowledge and what it would add to my writing.

Hello! I'm Opal. I write mostly horror, fantasy, and gothic romance.

My biggest childhood fear was abandonment.

My silliest childhood fear was looking out my window and seeing a werewolf. Now, I look out my window and hope to see one.
Hola, Horror Writers. I'm going to post and eat as I've pretty much just walked in. But, we're all about it today, so close to Halloween!
Tell me tell me. What scared you as a child?

No links, no hawking books please, till the end. Thanks Thanks.

I have been watching a show called "We Bought A Funeral Home", about a family converting a 12,000 sq ft Victorian era HAUNTED funeral home into their residential home.

The envy, it is real.

...I may have been scrolling "funeral homes for sale" during the last episode.

Unrelated, I am working with my spouse to create our own TTRPG. We each have more than 15 years of TTRPG and LARP experience, and we're using it all to make the best game we can.

Don't want to spoil anything yet, but I think it'll be a good one. Stay tuned.
