So, nearly five years since my last cycle tour holiday - early in the pandemic in 2020, between lockdowns, from Bordeaux to Carcassonne - I’ve finally organised the next one. In May I’m going to cycle from Nevers in the upper Loire, following the river or its Lateral Canal down to Orléans

But have you had shingles? I had it when I was in my early 30s. I was off work for 6 weeks. The pain was excruciating, and I just felt exhausted all the time. So much so that I couldn’t even read, and got bored to distraction, but if I did, I quickly flaked out.
Good to avoid it!

One distinction, presumably - Ok, two - between UK & India are we have far far, lower levels of illiteracy/uneducation & also of non-smartphone ownership, but what we do have is not insignificant, esp with older people. How will they be included in this scheme, or will they just become a demi-monde?

Not sure why you’d want to do a weekly shop anyway. Sure, non perishables, toilet rolls etc, but would you really want fresh fish, meat or even vegetables hanging around for a week? Best to buy fresh a day or two at a time. Cycling to shop works fine for that.

The 25% allocation to the “Civil List” is not set in stone. It can in principle change from year to year. At some stage presumably the govt will grow balls, or fear public reaction more, and reduce it.

I recall a short article in “The Sun” some decades ago which said more people are kicked to death by donkeys per year than die in plane crashes.
Apparently the claim is dubious, but what IS apparently true is that more people die in road accidents en route to/from airports than in air crashes.

Yes - owners or their staff. The Co-op, which used to have a shop here, still owns some land here and offered it to the council at peppercorn rent as free retailer staff parking if the council would cover insurance and admin. The (then Tory) council declined.

the on-street parking in dispute didn’t deserve to survive, and the real issues, on which the objectors were largely silent, were business rates and the ruinous rents charged by a particularly rapacious local landlord.
