Hrm. I don't *think* a study on this has been done. I do know that the most common cause of death among cowboys in the "Wild West" era was head injuries after falling from a horse. I throw that at modern cowboys who refuse to wear helmets.

Currently, horse riding is about 3.5x more dangerous than riding a motorcycle. My gut level feeling (without any evidence to back it up) is that widespread use of horses would actually increase this since there would be significantly more horse/bystander accidents.
