Sometimes you stumble on some #sharkscience that makes you think you don't really know anything about them at all. Yesterday i found this paper: "Observations of the bowmouth guitarfish by-catches by the tropical tuna purse seine fleet in the Indian Ocean’s open waters"

The American Dipper is NA’s only aquatic songbird, and happens to be in my top 2 birds🐦! Here’s one I happened to see at Multnomah Falls just outside a Portland for #SICB2026 doing its namesake “dipping” behavior! They will all walk around underwater looking for 🐛 and lil 🐟 to eat

So long Portland, it was a great #SICB2026, full of great science, great food (and fun commiseration when the food wasn’t so great), new and old friends, waterfalls, great science, an most importantly, great scientific community! See y’all in Pittsburgh for #SICB2027!

Having done a similar postdoc in the Fudge Lab on hagfish slime, I highly recommend this opportunity!
The Fudge Lab at Chapman University is recruiting a postdoc for an NSF-funded project on the biophysics of hagfish defensive slime deployment. Please repost!

Our first direct hit. Oddly our oyster work is the most popular thing we do. Great return on investment for taxpayers funding bay restoration.

The dumbest thing I did all year was catch a big fish in my kayak a few days ago, pull the hook out of the mouth while there was still a lot of tension in the line, then let go of the hook, which rocketed into my finger, burying deeply. I think touching the bone. What about y’all?

Fellow neurodivergent people, does anyone else struggle immensely with stereograms? I have never been able to see the hidden images. After finally being explained how to see them (and not just that they exist) I thought would be able to finally see them… nope. Is this a neurospicy perception thing?

Walking catfish are invasive in Florida & sometimes they're fish out of water. But they don't mind.

In fact, @noahwithfish.bsky.social authored a paper documenting their movements on land.

Some walking catfish were observed walking across parking lots to eat worms in puddles!

I went to take a couple of casts from the dock this morning before getting started with work, and got a nice 18” bass, but also found an invasive crayfish in my minnow trap that has not been documented for my county yet... Even when I’m off the clock, the invasive species find me… time to report

Oh man, can’t believe I almost missed world hagfish day! Having harvested perhaps more hagfish slime in a year than any other individual to investigate how effective their slime could be at stopping small boat propellers at high speeds for the Navy, I can attest their their slime is really unique!
