Worship of Asherah was commonplace in the 1st millennium BC but increasingly suppressed after the Assyrian and Babylonian invasions. 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles record the reforms of monotheist kings Hezekiah and Josiah which destroyed Asherah poles, shrines and “detestable idols”.

These are 2 of hundreds of 8th-7th BC terracotta goddess figures - likely Asherah, once consort of Yahweh - found from Ancient Israel and Judah. She is usually depicted with milk-heavy breasts and was probably kept in a household shrine.

I will once again be giving prizes* for book shop Father's Day displays that don't include Clarkson, WWII, arctic explorers, Stalingrad, or books that refer to the wife as "the war office."
