Oh, also concurrently offering a graduate-level stream ecology course.

For both courses, students are glamping (sleep in tents next to a building with flush toilets, a shower, kitchen, and laundry)

No cost for housing, $18 / day for all meals. All dietary restrictions accommodated.

If you send me your email in a DM I can send you a syllabus from 2024. The char limit is a little confining. Students learn major concepts from stream ecology, plus IDs (bugs,fish,algae), & sampling techniques. They design and execute an individual project & present it as a talk.

The course will feature daytime workshops with specialists like @dralgaegirl.bsky.social so students learn that knowledge is distributed and collaboration is key, and evening workshops on science communication, grad school and careers, and more. They also eat reasonably well for a field course.

June 11 -27, 2026, I'm teaching a 16-day field course on stream ecology. It's heavily focused on independent research projects, so they get some exposure to field research. Open to students from any institution. DM with your email if you want a poster to send your students. #Ecology #PUI #insects

This is why we shifted to have our students just write each chapter as a publishable unit. We had too many that didn't finish because of the activation energy to reshape papers back into chapters.

Pyractomena, as a genus, in general, but I think it's because the color doesn't stand out as much, the flash patterns aren't as "flashy", and in terms of abundance they are dwarfed where we are by the many Photurus and two Photinus species on the property.
