You wonder why shows get canceled, but why SHOULD we have long-lasting series when y’all go ahead and rip everything to shreds the SECOND it does something you don’t like? It’s always en vogue to hate on something, I guess. It’s so tiresome.

My GOD the art we could create. I could cry just thinking about it. The starving artist thing is just romanticized bullshit. Healthy creatives make the best art.
honestly, the same thing I'm doing now.

it's hard to imagine the world we'd live in if we all had UBI. we could just... work to supplement our income, choosing what we wanted to do, instead of doing whatever just to live, that's crazy to me
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

This episode is a turning point. Things begin to get more intense as the time of day changes.

I think this speaks to an inherent level of continual degradation of quality in our lifetimes due to mass production and separating people from the means of production. Souls care about quality, automation does not.

And that’s where Layne’s piece comes in. We’re at a point in the biz where it’s way harder to get read, harder for projects that would have been a slam dunk pre-pandemic.

It’s a moment when the advice needs to be more insightful than “have a spec.”

“Write your spec” is like saying “print out your script,” “spell your name right on the cover page.”

All of this correlates to the people who sold specs, but what does it say about HOW to make it in this insane market?

It says nothing. It’s “you can make a movie on your iPhone!”

“Write your spec” is the beginning of useful advice. But there are 1000 variables between that and “success story of a guy who wrote his spec.”

It’s the “save $5/week in an account with interest and you too will retire with millions.”

What Layne was saying is “That’s not ENOUGH.”

To defend Layne a bit, back when I was a screenwriting advice-giver, I tried to make sure what I said was both practical and realistic about what that advice could do for you.

Yes, you should write specs. But that’s like the “put garbage in garbage can” lesson Homer is told in parenting class
This thread did well and seems to have got the point it was trying to get across here on blue sky. But man, on the other site I’ve seen about 50 passive aggressive responses from older established white men. Which is not shocking.
Said with love but there is a tone deafness in the "just write your spec!" advice that seems to be totally ignored in the current climate.

It works if you're repped. If reps are taking new clients. If places are buying A LOT. If rooms are staffing unknowns/lower levels. If not? It's a platitude.

Actual question: why do these talking head videos always use profanity in the audio, but in the subtitles change the word? What’s going on with that?

This thread. Also: at my (upper/mid) level, all I'm hearing is "make your own thing." I've been doing that for 20 years. It's been a nice way to supplement my scattered income from selling scripts. But to make something, you need to pay the people helping you (at a certain point). So, who funds it?

Going through this right now. Most writers I know are going through this and have been for a LONG TIME. It’s rough out there. We’re all just trying to weather the storm until we can do what we love once again.
1. I see elsewhere on Bluesky that the discourse has turned toward telling writers not to be ashamed to admit they have day jobs or other sources of income (or spousal/family financial support), and you know what, that's 100% correct. Day jobs and support from loved ones are great if you have them!

Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.

I was up for 5 shows this year. Sent strong samples and 2 showrunner recommendations for each job. Still didn’t get read. In some cases, execs did read and put me on a list. But Showrunners did not read. “We’re not staffing SE/ESE” level was basically the answer for all.

Yes. The writing is not the problem these days. It’s the fear of buying/development the studios/nets seem to have, it’s the lack of opportunities; the town feels like it’s been shut down since LAST October. And we only had about 2 good weeks before then.
It's good practice, absolutely. And it's good to have an arsenal of samples when the time eventually comes (if it ever comes!) But to continue to insist that if we just write something GOOD ENOUGH someone will SEE US is at a certain point, absolutely ignoring the industry's current failures.
November 25, 2025 at 5:04 PM
This whole thread! The fear-based mentality of the studios has trickled down to writers and it’s leaving the industry in a bad way when the next generation won’t be trained enough to make the bangers it needs to sustain itself.

The way people are being such dicks about Wicked: For Good is why I stay away from people who criticize movies before trying to enjoy them first.

Truly, why are we making “ending explained” videos for things that completely obvious endings??? Why are we doing this???
