I’m disgusted that we haven’t imposed secondary sanctions on Raiffeisen for openly and proudly transacting with Russia’s military-industrial sector. Austria is protecting this rotten bank and demanding compensation for its “losses” in Russia.

They’re using the interest, and the frozen Russian funds are being used as collateral for loans. There’s some concern about the legality of seizing them outright, and this avoids that possible legal dilemma.

Sanctions are law, and laws are ineffective when they’re not enforced. This is the problem, not sanctions themselves. The waivers, the delays, the lack of sufficient penalties for violations, etc.
