there's an entire superorder (very big category) of crustaceans called Syncarids, and like 99% of them are tiny white eyeless sub-millimeter things living in cavewater, except in Tasmania, where they just casually live on the surface world like regular shrimp. infuriating

Another new preprint, this one intended for a peer-reviewed journal, reports a new species of Lake Malawi cichlid, which probably attacks mouthbrooding female cichlids to feed on the eggs and larvae they are carrying. Preprints are not valid taxonomic publications.

Chindongo minutus, a small, but fiercely territorial cichlid from the rocky shores around Nkhata Bay, Lake Malawi. Males defend 'algal gardens', picking off nutritious material from among the tough attached filaments & a spawning site among the rocks. The drab females are able to range more widely.

Getting excited... for #FossilFriday ! Our Morrison Ankylosaur monograph may be published online in a week. Hopefully, this will lead to a fix in many ankylosaur phylogenies. A dozen known Morrison ankylosaur sites spanning 4 states. Who would have think it 35 years ago?

Go my Bothriolepis... This year's fish pecan pie! Bothriolepis was a peculiar-looking placoderm from the Devonian period or the Paleozoic. It had two long pointed pectoral fins and silly little eyes on top of its head.
