Been reading Gideon the Ninth at my typically glacial pace. I think I'm 13-ish chapters in? Doodle of Harrowhark because so far she has the energy of a malnourished kitten made out of knives and I love that kind of creature.

Collaboration with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory Center This image is the result of a collaboration between NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory Center and amateur astrophotographer Rolf Wahl Olsen. It is part of a series of professional-amateur collaboration images and was combined by Science Imager Joseph DePasquale from Chandra X-ray Observatory Center, using both X-ray, optical and infrared data. The image is composed of the following data: My deep 120 hour optical image Centaurus A Extreme Deep Field taken over 43 nights in 2013. 230 hours of Chandra X-ray data gathered over the past 15 years. Infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The combined exposure time is in excess of an astonishing 350 hours, or two weeks; more than the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Visible here is a small portion of the large Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237), centered on its central cluster of stars; NGC 2244. This large round nebula lies some 5000 light years away and can be found in the constellation Monoceros near Orion. In optical wide field images the entire nebula appears strikingly similar to the petals of a red rose, hence the name. The image is constructed from exposures in three very narrow (3nm) wavelength bands corresponding to the emission profiles of ionised Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur to form the resulting detailed and brightly coloured scene. The combined images in each filter were assigned to their natural colour channels using a PixelMath expression in PixInsight. This enables a synthetic 'natural' colour image to be created from the narrowband data. Several striking shapes can be seen here, many of which resemble animals of various kinds. In particular the figure of a leaping Cheetah is very obvious near the centre. These dark shapes are denser clouds of dust and gas, slowly being eroded away by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the young stars in the central cluster. These stars have themselves condensed out of the nebula relatively recently. The brightest cluster members, HD 46223 and HD 46150, are massive O-type stars with stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to have cleared the nebula's central cavity around the cluster. We use distant black holes to know the position of Earth in space. If we invented GPS and didn’t use them to confirm our position, GPS would be inaccurate and unusable because we could not tell the precise positioning of Earth even though we’d know the relationship between your car and a satellite.

www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/Astrophotography/Nebula... This image shows the famous Pillars of Creation region of the bright Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) in Serpens. Constructed from monochrome exposures in two very narrow wavelength bands of ionised Hydrogen and Oxygen, the data has been combined into a colour image to reveal this highly detailed and very dramatic scene. The bright colours are due to emission from the ionised gases, energised by light from nearby stars. The stars were removed during image processing to fully reveal the intricate structure of the nebula. Orange-red nebulosity corresponds to H-Alpha emission, and the blue areas are OIII. The core area of the nebula was made famous in 1995 as the "Pillars of Creation" by images from the Hubble Space Telescope. The pillars are giant columns of gas and dust, approximately 9 light-years long, that are slowly being eroded away by intense radiation pressure from nearby young stars. The nebula lies 6000 light-years distant in the Sagittarius arm of our Milky Way galaxy. The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure. I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 120 hours of data on 43 different nights in Feb-May 2013 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45. I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data, with the goal of presenting this majestic Southern galaxy as it has never been seen before - with all the main features showing in one single image, in order to truly get a grasp of what this intriguing object is all about. Visible are some unique features, some of which have never been imaged before by amateurs: * A set of enormous reddish filaments associated with the relativistic jets. * The complete shell structure of the extended halo, showing both the faint outer shells and brighter inner ones. * 709 of the catalogued globular clusters orbiting the galaxy. * Integrated Flux Nebulae permeating the entire field of view around the galaxy.
