This isn’t the first time a typhoon has caused major damage to the Native Village of Kipnuk. Typhoon Merbok worsened the riverbank erosion in 2022. And a summer storm last year exacerbated the problem further. Read this story and keep supporting public radio! www.npr.org/2025/04/14/n...
Federal funding freeze halts key infrastructure projects in tribal communities
Riverbank stabilization, lead and asbestos contamination are just some of the projects tribes planned to address before the Trump administration froze funds.

In a June court declaration, Paul wrote any further delay in starting the project “will create a risk that our village will suffer environmental, physical, and cultural harms that cannot be reversed.”
nateperez.bsky.social
The village’s environmental director Rayna Paul told me earlier this year, if or when the grant is reinstated, the hold up has delayed the project for at least a year. That’s because the river – from which materials come in by barge – is frozen for nearly half the year.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration terminated a $20 million grant for the Native Village of Kipnuk that would have helped mitigate this type of disaster. The hold up has delayed engineering, planning and design for a riverbank that's been eroding for years, destroying homes and buildings.

L.A.'s notorious refrigerator-less apartments will soon be illegal.

Gov. Newsom just signed AB 628, a bill requiring all landlords to provide tenants with a working fridge and stove starting next year.

Here's my previous @laist.com story on this bill: laist.com/news/housing...
BYO-fridge? New bill aims to ban LA’s refrigerator-less apartments
Why do so many L.A. landlords make renters bring their own refrigerators? An Inglewood state assemblymember is seeking to stop the practice.

Now 81, he has a LOT to say about his ~50 years in prison, why he thinks Biden bucked the FBI to finally release him, how Indigenous people are "in danger" under Trump, and his next chapter. www.huffpost.com/entry/leonar...

1/ I’m Till Eckert, a ProPublica reporter. For the past 2 weeks, I’ve been going to the same NY immigration courthouse.

Nearly every time, I see ICE agents arresting immigrants. Today, a woman was slammed to the ground after begging officials not to take her husband away.

Americans are so hot for shrimp that Red Lobster lost $11 million after offering a $20 endless buffet.

Much of it came from India, until Trump's 50% tariffs punched the industry down and left women searching for work to pay rent. With Almaas Masood

Many may not know that a multibillion-dollar fortune made on those ubiquitous products fuels far-right candidates across the country.

The Twisted Teens LP is the best new thing I've heard in a while. Is it garage? Country? IDK! But it rocks and I'm pumped for a new one.

Alex Stillman of the new Minneapolis pressing plant OUTTA WAX needed to get Twisted Teens copies of their widely unreleased new album in time for their UK tour dates...so they just flew out there and joined them on the road. A fun tour diary + the band kindly let me share one of their new songs.

According to a preliminary internal report circulated inside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, federal and local officials recovered ammunition with the rifle that appeared to be engraved with statements
"expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology."
But a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation cautioned that report had not been verified by A.T.F. analysts, did not match other summaries of the evidence, and might turn out to have been misread or misinterpreted. In fast-moving investigations, such status reports are not made public because they often contain a mixture of accurate and inaccurate information.
