My first job on a newspaper was at the Independent during Andreas Whittam Smith's last years as editor. It already felt like being at the end of something rather fine. Not perfect, but an amazing time & place to be a young writer. Thank you Andreas. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/n...

Great to read all those amazing reviews of Ivo van Hove's production of All My Sons. Not so great to see those prices. Top seats £300, cheapest around £100. I hate the way that theatre has become such a rich person's delight.

Remember when Amazon held a sale during Independent Bookstore Day in an effort to undercut indie bookstores?

We didn’t forget. Support local bookstores during Small Business Saturday and beyond.

You need to learn English… but we will stop you going to classes.
Racist protest against mums going to English classes is just such a vile, toxic result of the anti-migrant movement. Enraging and heartbreaking. www.thetimes.com/uk/education...

The gaslighting is relentless:Saudi Arabia is changing, women are thriving, empowerment is the new norm. And because loyalty is the currency of their privilege, they take on the regime’s dirtiest work:attacking dissidents, dismissing critics, and teaching ordinary women to doubt their own suffering.

I read this article expecting to hate the scammer. But I ended up feeling incredibly sad for her. The joys of writing and reading are under such intense threat from AI, and we are all losing so much.
A few months ago @thelocal.to got a promising pitch from a writer with bylines in whole bunch of reputable publications—The Cut, The Guardian, Dwell, Architectural Digest, etc. Then I started investigating. Here's a story about fabulists in journalism's AI slop era. thelocal.to/investigatin...

A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

The mountain of waste by the Cherwell is poisoning our environment. It’s also being seized upon by those who would poison our politics with xenophobia. This is what happens now when government fails to act, migrants are blamed, hate rises.

This is so true!
There is nothing new about Home Secretaries saying that refugees must return when countries become safe. The problem is that the countries don't become safe. So all this does is make refugees less secure and less able to integrate...
Is there a Home Secretary who, since 2005, *hasn’t* “introduced” safe return reviews for refugees? Other than Grant Shapps, who only had a few hours. Re-announcing an old, existing and totally pointless policy is very, very tired.

Once every 20 years or so, the director-general of the BBC is forced to resign for being insufficiently rightwing. Alastair Milne in 1987. Greg Dyke in 2004. Tim Davie in 2025. The great irony is that the BBC was in all cases profoundly biased towards established power. But just not biased enough …

Your members want more - we want nature protected and birds given space to thrive. Please hold this destructive government to account.
The Government has tabled 67 last-minute amendments to the Planning & Infrastructure Bill.‼️

Rushed through with little scrutiny, it’s a shambolic way to reform the planning system.

It creates confusion, sidelines science and leaves nature dangerously exposed.

Unspeakable cruelty.
A mom in Houston reported her 15-year-old son with autism missing. She spent 6 days terrified, searching for him. The whole time, Houston police knew exactly where he was since they helped ICE place him in a refugee facility.

This is beyond cruel.
