For any #birdoftheyear folk out there I can thoroughly recommend this book. Curlews on Vulture Street, by Prof Darryl Jones. Great stories about the birds who live where we do, and the science that has helped to understand them. @gingerandhoney.bsky.social

The latest Intel asked @mrcoxy.bsky.social "What’s the one thing Australia could do to better address local conflict risks in our region?"

James’s experience in shaping global policy frameworks for fragile states informs his response this week.

*8/26/2025 thread of noncooperation*

I'm going to start with my own thread about all the people who have resisted American authoritarianism in the past - both the oppression AND THE OPPOSITION TO IT are our history. We need to learn from it.

2/
🧵This country has a deep history of resisting & rejecting oppression. It isn’t often taught or acknowledged.

We need to know. We need to learn from our elders, ancestors, & political forebears. Now.

A thread about that. I will inevitably miss many examples; pls reply or QT with additions.

Absolutely perfect. What a gift to the world Tom Lehrer was.
Tom Lehrer, who just died at age 97, outlived his New York Times obituary writer.

It’s really fascinating what happens when you remove diversity—white male incompetency is placed on full display and with no one to blame for their actions —so they just lie.

Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes?! 🤯

Hi, I'm a nest researcher 👋 and new here on BlueSky, sharing the craziest #bird nests I've ever found. 👀 Today, I’m sharing my discovery of rebellious birds that build nests out of anti-bird spikes. And honestly, it's like telling a joke...

A thread. 🧵

The White House backing away from its freeze on federal grants is a flat out win. As @choosedemocracy.bsky.social wrote in its email blast today: "It doesn't mean we will win every fight. But it does mean that anyone who is telling you it's hopeless is wrong."

Just re-upping this again because the Temu Trumps in the LNP insist on bringing every culture war here: the Morrison govt spent $20.8bn on consultants in its final year - the equivalent of 54,000 FT public servants. The private sector benefits with govt cuts. No one else.
