Duriel fighting in Diablo 2 1.0 literally filtered like 75% of possible builds. Trying to solo Necro was miserable bc you knew you probably couldn't beat act 2.
No, I 100% agree that computer RPGs these days have too much handholding. I, too, yearn for the days of being able to spend hours crafting my perfect build from hundreds of available options, only to discover that it mathematically cannot survive the mandatory rat fight portion of the first dungeon.

In Monster Rancher 2 there's a secret superboss (King Ape) that you can only fight for the first 5 years of in game time. He goes away once you unlock the ability to buy the Magic Banana item.
Despite the serendipitous connection it's an entirely unintentional bug.
