People honked horns took photos & video & showed support. & they felt seen & supported after our cities have been terrorized by ICE. Some drove past multiple times, passengers cheering & in tears. A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

One online activist called Bray a “domestic terrorist professor,” and another shared the address of his home in New Jersey. The campus’s chapter of the conservative student group Turning Point USA then launched a petition Thursday to demand that the university fire him, referencing Trump’s executive order and claiming Bray is a risk to their safety.

Bray has received three death threats since Sept. 26, including one threatening to kill him in front of his students, according to screenshots of emails reviewed by The Washington Post. The threats and the publication of his address compelled Bray to move his family to Spain for the remainder of the academic year, he said

The acceleration of political violence has been frightening: from the attack on the Capitol in January 2021, to the murder of a healthcare executive allegedly by Luigi Mangione, to the attempted assassinations of Trump, to the killing of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., to the shooting of state lawmakers in Minnesota. And now Kirk’s murder.

There are many guilty parties in the rise of political violence. But to our minds, among the biggest culprits are the universities. In the same way that madrassas radicalize jihadis, America’s campuses are among the places in the U.S. most hostile to disagreement and debate. Where they preach “inclusion,” they actually practice exclusion—shouting down speakers they disagree with, for instance. Where they promote “diversity,” they actually enforce a uniformity of thought, denying tenure to dissenters.

It is great to hear that @democracyforward.org and @asanews.bsky.social won their lawsuit against the Trump administration.

Dear Members of the American Sociological Association:
We are delighted to share the ruling made today in ASA's case against the Department of Education.
The case was filed in February 2025 in collaboration with a coalition of nationwide associations of educators and a public school district. Today, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland ruled in favor of the coalition, declaring that the Trump-Vance administration's attempt to require school districts throughout the nation to censor lessons, abandon student support programs, and certify their compliance with the administration's unlawful interpretation of civil rights is unconstitutional.
ASA President Adia Harvey Wingfield says: "The American Sociological Association is delighted with this ruling. It affirms that we sociologists can still do the challenging yet rewarding work of asking and answering hard questions-about race, inequality, society, and more. Furthermore, it confirms that teachers across the nation can continue to support students, enrich academic institutions, and maybe most importantly, do the essential work of providing a nuanced, thoughtful education! ASA will always stand with and for sociologists, and we are proud to stand up for students, for free speech, and for all Americans' right to an education that isn't marred by censorship, threats, and scare tactics."

If you work in higher ed, you need to get your folks together and end the use of course evals or at least bar their consideration in evaluation, promotion, and hiring. This needed to happen yesterday because they don't measure learning, they measure instructor gender, but now it's a snitch pool.
