*Did* one BASIC thing?! They are still doing it, take it from a furloughed Fed! It is a really big deal and is more significant than coordinated press releases around an S.Ct. arg.

It depends on the seat. For example Van Hollen’s trip to see Abrego Garcia in El Salvador was impressive. But not everyone needs to/can do that. Idk how they voted on Rubio. But all of that will not affect the Court. 😔
monicagoldberg.bsky.social
That would not change the outcome here.
monicagoldberg.bsky.social
Fair enough. I would not be surprised to see these things in the coming days. I wish I were confident they would make a difference.

Idk who your members are; I’m lucky in that mine are always doing the right thing. If yours need to go further let them know that! But Dems have very limited power rn. 🤷‍♀️😫

Agree with all of this. I am also concerned about the lack of an ask. A big tent is great and all but what is the ask?
monicagoldberg.bsky.social
If there are enough of them at critical points, the Court doesn’t look like this. I’m not opposed to the things suggested by the OP, but it’s not like they will change the outcome. That was decided by the Senate majority being in GOP hands when the seats opened up.
monicagoldberg.bsky.social
Exactly what can they do about it?

Wasn’t Brooks saying months ago that it is time to get in the streets? Has he done so?

How is it different from USAID?

Love the one-star hotels. My bf and I hitched around Europe in the 80s and always stayed at them. Perfect for a young couple. 😊

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

NEW — I dug into the story of ICE abducting a 13-year-old boy in Massachusetts and moving him 500 miles across state lines without notifying his mother, local cop's complicity, and how the federal government's justification for such cruelty is already falling apart:
ICE took a 13-year-old they said had a gun. Local cops say he didn’t.
Now he's detained 500 miles away from his Massachusetts home.

What is he blaming her for other than her own conduct?

I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.
Ohio State changes policy on group conferences after Trump administration threats
A federal investigation into potentially discriminatory practices at Ohio State prompted the university to change its policies regarding conferences.

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

They could also waive the 60-vote requirement at any time.

4/ Ok, so then the obvious next step is to negotiate a compromise. That's how we've always avoided shutdowns. And Republicans need to convene those talks, bc they're in charge.

But here's the kicker - Trump is telling them to BOYCOTT NEGOTIATING. And they are following orders.

If you want to help those fired from CDC over the weekend, the CDC Mutual Aid Network is helping folks with emergency rent, groceries, etc.

altCDC gets no funds from donations, but we can verify they are legit and funds go directly to those impacted.

We're collecting resources for furloughed CDC workers (and other feds!) on our new Shutdown Survival Guide page. Check it out (and let us know if we've missed something!) www.cdcresourceportal.org/resources/sh...

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.
