The Spanish crown didn't even pay cash out of pocket for the expedition: They sold a round of indulgences, borrowed from some Genoese financiers, and turned a port's back-tax obligations into one of the caravels.

I spend 70 bucks a month on my bus pass and essentially 0 bucks on bike maintenance (belt drive baybee). Though Ill probably drop the bus pass since with my current commute im only using about 50 a month in fares.

All the money I used to spend on car (gas, insurance, loan, parts) is mine now!

When my partner's car died almost 11 years ago, we calculated that it would be cheaper to rent every other weekend than the spend the $$ on maintenance for his clunker. We've been #carfree ever since!

About 5 years #carfree for us. Well north of £10k saved. I’m used to it now but ‘free’ is the right term. It honestly felt like having a weight lifted. No stressing about insurance, huge unexpected bills & money wasted at petrol pumps. Journeys are now fun. 🚆 🚊 🚃 🚌 🚲 🚶‍♀️

They tried for like two years to hire someone before me and you'd never guess but instead of bioinformaticians they kept getting environmental scientists applying. How frustrating.

🙃

My state job category is environmental scientist. The job posting I answered talked about looking at algae with a microscope and checking water for fecal contamination. The fact I happened to be a bioinformatician and also apply for this job was a coincidence. This is just how it works.

I was discussing our inability to hire with the state during our most recent contract negotiations using myself as an example. I am the bioinformatician. I talk to the genome sequencers with computer code. I write very poor software and conduct complicated phylogenetic analyses. ->

i'm sure duffy is just lying here but also i'll say again that they hard time conceptualizing relations between people that aren't strictly hierarchical.

Impossible to articulate how many of the state's problems are just our hiring process is fucking garbage. Yet somehow it was easier to rename the state than it is to change basically any aspect of it!

This website was absolutely shot through with vagueposting and audience specific contextless posts since the day it came online. Many of us were vagueposting the moment we got an invite code. This is our natural state.

The only opportunities we've found are the Courtland for Sunday jazz or a jazz night at the Royal Bobcat though I'd say it was more of an excuse than a reason

Was in Worcester last week and had a bad taste in my mouth about something. I don't usually spit in public it's not hygienic but sometimes you have little choice.

Anyway unrelated there's an ugly Columbus statue right in front of the train station.

Some excellent discussion of this even in God, War, and Providence.

The completely incomprehensible cruelty of this event is pivotal in basically everything that came after it, and it's interesting to see that even the fucking crown was like "goddamn guys what the fuck"

TW: Settler violence

For Indigenous People's Day, I invite you to read about the Gnadenhutten Massacre committed by US settlers against the pacifist Moravian Lenape. The evilest act in Ohio history, learning about it radicalized me & helped me understand the broader project of settler colonialism.

I grew up right near the site of another massacre. There was a statue to the colonist who led the slaughter, which was thankfully replaced by a memorial to the victims. The memorial was subsequently vandalized repeatedly en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_...
