I had to zip it to fit it on the floppy disk!

So I don't have the display yet so I've just got it hooked up to my regular monitor, and my desk is A MESS, but the deck kiosk works! Even with a custom bootsplash!

"Decker is a program written by and for humans."

"Winners Don't Use Gen AI"
-Millie Millennium, Decker Zinemistress

I and many other people working with Decker, as well as Decker's developer Internet Janitor, oppose the use of generative AI tools such as LLMs in our work.

All the work you see on show here is the product of human creativity, without the use of generative AI.

25 years in, we are NOT allowing genAI music onto OC ReMix, full stop.

We're 100% against genAI music and are a community geared toward authentic creativity and artistic development. You don't get that by doing text prompts.

Recent comment: "This A.I. music is as fake as 🏈 🦇."

In this case, this is human-made. (3 of our judges panel are also involved as collaborators on it: jnWake, pixelseph, and paradiddlesjosh.)

We explicitly do NOT accept any music made with generative A.I. There are tools out there that help identify genAI music. If music involving genAI is ever unknowingly let on, it will be removed if it's discovered.

My custom #decker mousepad has arrived
A white mousepad (with a retro beige wheel mouse on it) with the Decker logo and text underneath in Garamond condensed reading "A program for your computer."

like I don't know how to explain people that "use mate instead" is not an answer to "how do I change icon themes in lxde"
milliesquilly.com
Having a lot of "this is why people get frustrated with linux" feelings when every time I google how to do something I find forum threads where people say "actually you should not be doing that, use a completely different piece of software to do something different"
milliesquilly.com
which I mean I can't complain about since I am using a pi with only 2gb of ram and in the long run don't actually need much of a desktop environment for my purposes
milliesquilly.com
Yeah it's entirely possible that this is more of a "whatever the raspberry pi people did to lxde to customise it for their purposes" issue haha
milliesquilly.com
Up late writing a lil script to generate .desktop files for the deck kiosk
milliesquilly.com
Huh, aside from the whole "manually creating .desktop files because there's no sensible tool for it" issue it looks like the problem is mostly that whatever desktop environment the pi uses is slow to refresh if you rename or change the icon in the .desktop file. Odd
milliesquilly.com
this is why I save the little computer things I make onto floppy disks and write colourful labels on them in sharpie
innes.bsky.social
The problem with computer jobs is that it's all in your head. You can't touch or eat the code you write, it's too abstract. You need to find something to make with your hands if you want to stay okay
milliesquilly.com
I think I have a workable solution determined through the technology of reverse engineering .desktop files generated by the menu editor (which for some reason isn't installed by default in the new version of raspberry pi os???)
milliesquilly.com
But also like I don't want to have to manually edit a bunch of text files. Yes I can write a script to automatically generate them once I know how they're formatted but I don't WANT to have to, I want to just click a thing and go "make a shortcut to this" and have it just fucking work.
milliesquilly.com
Every time I look up how to do it on Raspberry Pi OS I get a lot of stuff about manually creating .desktop files. Aside from being really fiddly, I can't seem to get this to work and look all nice and neat. I know it MUST be possible seeing as the OS's own .desktop entries look pretty
milliesquilly.com
A linux complaint:
Trying to figure out making nice desktop shortcuts in raspberry pi OS. Basically I want to have the shortcuts named something arbitrary and with whatever icon I want.

In Windows this is accomplished by dragging with the right mouse button and clicking "create shortcut"

I've found mine is really good for cooking skin-on bits of chicken, like wings or legs. Comes out nice and crispy.

it's playing in ALL our heads!

If the US can ever vomit this stupid era out we're gonna need widespread all-ages education on basic facts like when you'd see old billboards or MST3k shorts advertising the concept of hand washing or being good. Stop Using Gasoline To Wash Clothes. Springs Are Ubiquitous & Essential To Modern Life
