PROLOGUE July 2023 Moonlight reflected off the curves of the black sports car as it sped along the winding asphalt, swerving recklessly over the centre line. The car was a blur of motion on the empty stretch of road, its engine roaring through the otherwise silent night. They had been going for hours, racing from the city, along the coast of Highway 10. A gibbous moon lit the hills and coastline as they streaked past. The beautiful green, grey, and brown landscape, and white-capped ocean waves were ignored by the car and its driver alike as “Brogue Bight” flashed in reflective lettering from the side of the road.

The wind gusted as she stepped out of her car; she grabbed at her baseball cap to keep it on her head. Pulling it down, she held it with one hand and looked down over the hills to the ocean and over the town. The view was breathtaking; green hills and dramatic cliffs gave way to ocean waves glittering in the sunlight. She always felt a sense of peace and belonging when she stared out over the town. From this vantage point she could see about half the houses, which stretched down along Brogue Bight Road. Grey clouds hung distantly in the sky, and Celia wondered if the weather might finally break.

She looked around the empty street with apprehension. She’d have to walk alone. Wish I could call a cab, but there’s none in this little town. It was a rare moment when she missed the conveniences of city life. Contemplating which direction to take home, she felt vulnerable. Most of the shops along The Loop closed at suppertime, leaving the road quiet and deserted. Waves crashed against the rocky cliff behind her, and she breathed in the smell of salt spray in the air. Hesitating, she turned left. The closest restaurant was that way, and she didn’t feel like cooking alone after such a strange day. Celia decided a feed of fish and brewis from Bradach Brewery would be just the thing. The gastro-pub brewed its own selection of beers, as well as boasting some of the best tasting fish available on the east coast. She started through the humid evening air, glad to be heading downhill. The evening still held much of the day's heat, but loneliness and a light ocean breeze left her feeling slightly chilled.

Ting-a-ling-a-ling The bell chimed a dainty song, dangling at the end of the z's wire Celia had rigged to the door. Another local looky-loo, I bet. She sighed and turned on her customer service smile. “Afternoon,” she cheerfully greeted the three people entering. The first was a scowling middle-aged woman with a greying “let-me-talk-to-your-manager” haircut, wearing jeans and a long-sleeve button-up despite the warm day. The second was an older woman with white hair, also in jeans and a long-sleeve blouse, stepping slowly with the help of the third and youngest, a petite girl with blond hair past her waist, somewhere between 12 and 20, also modestly dressed. “Vanessa, I don’t know why you want to come in here. They sell knick-knacks like this at Grady’s.” The first woman looked around, holding the door open. “Mom, Nan loves to see the knit stuff. Maybe she could sell some things she makes, too?” The young girl spoke quietly, head sunk into the collar of her oversized shirt. Feathery bangs hung into her eyes. “Well, she can sell them at Grady’s. I’ll talk to Juanita about it.” Letting the door shut behind her, the mother crossed her arms.

From my newest WIP, an un-named fantasy story about a young witch.
Putricilla slid down onto the stone walkway, hearing the rip of canvas. She felt at her backside and twisted to see a tear longer than her hand running down her rear. *Oh, by the bells. Another pair of pants I have to repair.* She stepped through the wooden door into the tower, and jogged down the narrow steps inside her bedroom.  A wardrobe nearly twice her height held all her clothes. Three uniform dresses, one for special occasions, two cloaks for rain and snow, and a stack of pants and shirts she’d made herself for the summer, when no other students were around. She changed into the regular school uniform, a grey dress with indigo trim at the waist, neck, and hem, and tied an indigo apron around her thin middle. Her stomach rumbled. *Maybe I should go down for dinner.* Running her fingers through her hair, she untangled the worst of the knots and checked her reflection in the mirror. Same green eyes, same yellow hair cut off at her chin, same crooked front teeth. Satisfied the headmistress wouldn’t admonish her for being slovenly, she  left her room through the lower door and descended through the tower, past the empty rooms of other students. Putricilla knew within the week dozens of students would buzz through the halls and she would lose her solitude. *I hope whoever's arriving isn't heading right for the kitchens too.*

Black text on a white background: Celia looked around the foyer. From the amount of full garbage bags she could tell Hunter wasn’t wasting any time. “Where should we start?” “I’ve been picking up the obvious trash. The moth-eaten clothes and carpets, trash left by vandals, that sort of thing. I put some stuff in the dining room that I think could be worth keeping or selling. The furniture is all solid wood, and heavy, so it’s all left in place.” He led Celia and Ness to the left of the front door, through a set of dark double doors. “Wow, Hunter. This table is exquisite.” Celia stared at the long table, surrounded by twenty tall-backed dining chairs. The surface was covered in stacks of dishes and glassware, oil lamps, ashtrays, and other small items. She marvelled at the crystal chandelier hanging above the colourful mess. It was beautiful despite the years of cobwebs and dust. “I want to keep that for sure, and the chandelier.”
