Produced in 24 hours, done under a punishing deadline, no time to hang about - yet that image IS "The Thing" to me, and to millions of others as well, I suspect. Those images, those compositions, those posters ARE the films, in my head. What a talent. He'll be so missed.

Rest in Peace to the great Drew Struzan, a man whose work sparked the imaginations of a whole generation of movie nerds. The master is gone.

I had the privilege of visiting him in his studio once and getting to talk shop. Here’s his words on one of his masterpieces:

The Ian Watkins story was utterly horrific and shocking when it was first revealed. It also had a devastating effect on his former band mates in Lost Prophets, as explored in Ian Winwood’s sobering book Bodies about the dark side of the rock music industry

7 reasons why The Thing (1982) is a Christmas film:

1) snow
2) bearded men concealing surprises
3) compulsory party games
4) introverts shunning group activities
5) digestive issues

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

I may be missing something here, but “Peace or else, but we’ll kill you anyway, monetise your extinction, and Tony Blair will oversee the logistics,” doesn’t sound like much of an offer to me.

Robert Redford playing a gentle incarnation of death, coming for a frightened old woman in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" (1962). An extraordinary performance then, terribly bittersweet today

To name a few that maybe don't get mentioned as much, DOWNHILL RACER, JEREMIAH JOHNSON, THE HOT ROCK, THE CANDIDATE, THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER. In recent years there's ALL IS LOST, A WALK IN THE WOODS, David Lowery's PETE'S DRAGON remake. I'm going to have to watch THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR again.

Robert Redford wasn’t just a great actor. He used his profile to help others. From environmentalism, Native American rights, LGBTQ advocacy, and independent film, he cared deeply about people, and preserving their culture and world.

But most of all, I loved how Redford held a phone.
How he righted wrongs with a phone.
How he made holding a phone so fucking sexy, so morally righteous.
