It really is about time someone took the bull by the horns and made Shades of Greene available on Blu-ray. Perhaps dear Russell Minton could take it in hand?? I'm sure Thames would let the BBC have the rights for a token sum.

It's bizarre that Shades of Greene has never had any life since its original broadcast, never appearing on any home video format.

It's easy to forget how good ITV drama could be in the 1970s. Shades of Greene is certainly up there with Brideshead, Rumpole and The Sandbaggers as one of the gems of the time, though very different from those.

For material of the quality of Shades of Greene, by possibly the 20th century's greatest British novelist, I'd have loved a full house, but the reaction of those who came was thrilling. Many didn't know what to expect, and everyone was blown away.

Thanks to all who came to the screening of Shades of Greene, the Graham Greene anthology drama series made by Thames in 1975, which I showed at the Electric Palace in Hastings as part of their TV season. (TV was invented - or perhaps discovered is the better word - in Hastings.)

Sad to hear of the death of Diane Keaton. She's always been my favourite contemporary movie actor. She's sublime in Woody Allen's films and also in The Godfather. I wasn't always nuts about her later films which tended to be gooey Hollywood, but she was always a delight.

At 11:00, Two Gentle People, at 19:30, The Destructors, one of Greene's most controversial stories and, he felt, one of the best things he ever wrote, followed by a comedy piece, Alas Poor Maling, the only TV script ever written by Greene himself.

Greene disliked most dramatisations of his work by other people but really admired SHADES OF GREENE. Inexplicably, it has never had a home video release so it is very rarely seen.

The tonal range is wide, from bitter-sweetness to violence to light comedy. Do come along if you can.

SHADES OF GREENE is a series of 18 dramatisations of Graham Greene short stories by Thames TV, including one by Greene himself, his only TV script. The writers, actors and directors are the cream of 70s TV. Greene himself is, of course, one of the 20th C's great novelists and screenwriters.

So atmospheric. Logopolis has many of my favourite Adric moments, with him questioning the Doctor and reacting to revelation after revelation as that sepulchral atmosphere builds in the first two eps. You took this 8 yo right along with you. As for Castrovalva: "Me! I'm the trap..." Marvellous.

He had a very individual, independent approach to Doctor Who. A careful balancing of the things we all love about it with the subjects that interested him. Hence, we get a smorgasbord of quantum physics, mystery play and philosophy for a new spin on established storytelling formula and symbols.

The timing of this also makes it something of a tribute to Chris Bidmead.

There’s so much to say about Chris Bidmead’s Dr Who. Its pleasing coldness, its determination to turn maths into drama, its victory over the chaos and entropy that plagued his predecessor. Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva are all one story, aren’t they? His Master’s Masterplan. RIP

Castrovalva was my very first; the one that hooked me and improved my life by doing so. 😥❤️ Wish I could have met him and thanked him.
