The only time I’ve ever seen an email like the one Netflix sent out was when I was working for a company that just got into bed with VC and we’re about to be carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey carcass.

Annual tradition: Krampus in the City, the Indestructibles vs. folklore holiday creature novella, is free for Krampusnacht, because I think it's funny. (Also free tomorrow, too.)

I'm not even dealing with Ingram at the moment and that third price hike of the year made me want to cuss someone out.

Yes. This. Only a few people on this earth have an understanding of how deeply and utterly I can hate something with every fiber of my being. A furious, seething energy that sets me alight and fuels my hate-fire like an ignited wellhead, endlessly burning. Hating A.I. forever is *easy work* for me.
“AI is clearly sticking around so you have to get used to it” wrong. I don’t have to get used to shit. I am a practiced hater and I can keep this going for decades if I am required to

I would commit a minor felony to have a post about my books do as well in term of reach as an off the cuff rant about being told how to dress on airplanes.

Just finished a cleanup of the latest manuscript, which I'd intentionally set aside to try to start fresh with (I haven't pitched to a publisher in years). The temptation to just do things the old way and not take risks is STRONG. But I really want to reach new eyes with this one.

People give me a hard time about not taking time off from work, but to be honest if I ever give myself more than a three day weekend away from dealing with work when I go back I want to turn around and walk into the sea and drown. so not taking time off is a defense mechanism.

I am not a gambler by any stretch but I wish there was a way to place like, bets on whether or not we find out a show or movie was written with ChatGPT later down the line, cos there's one right now I'm 1,000% convinced and I'd put legit money on being right.

At the pub tonight, Smithwicks in hand, and they’ve got Mazzy Star, Oasis, Radiohead, Everclear, the Goo Goo Dolls, and the Verve playing. Put the phone face down and felt young for an hour or so. I miss who I was back then.

"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

Stoppard’s plays altered brain chemistry. You never looked at the world the same way after seeing one. The world is a dimmer place today.

Someone asked if a certain show's dialogue was written by AI, and if you've read any of the junk dialogue ChatGPT will churn out, it's hard to NOT hear it. It could just be that the writers were rushed/off their game/uninspired, but I couldn't tune out that style while watching, and it made me sad.

One of those things from before I escaped corporate that continues to haunt me: the last corporate kickoff I sat in on, one of the designers had recreated the CEO's mascot using AI. It looked like Temu Joe Camel. The room went WILD, minions style. I felt like I'd stumbled into a cult.

As always on our national consumerism holiday - remember to support your indie bookstores whenever possible, and keep in mind indie authors are small businesses themselves, so it's cool to support them however you can too. (Backlists help keep author careers alive!)

Look at me, remembering to schedule this year's giveaway of my superheroes vs. Krampus novella I give away on Krampusnacht every year when I don't forget to ACTUALLY SCHEDULE IT. It's been 50/50 since the story first came out. I either remember a week early or two weeks too late.

"Device hoarding" is just this year's "quiet quitting," the media inventing an antagonistic term for behaviors people engage in when faced by abusive systems controlled by rich people. The same folks mad about "device hoarding" were telling folks avocado toast was why they can't buy a house.

Between "dress better when you fly" and seeing several articles about "why don't Americans dress better when they" in major publications, it feels like there's a creeping move toward classism disguised as fashion or taste happening and it feels very intentional.

Dear foreign nationals in war-torn countries, terrorism hot-spots, and amidst our enemies:

If you help the United States, we’ll fuck you over and abandon you. Not the individual servicepeople or intelligence officers — they’ll fight for you. I mean the depraved, soulless leadership of the nation.
So now they’re going to be doing individualized re-review of tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees’ cases on TOP of the re-review of 200,000+ refugees who entered under Biden?

This Creedence from 1970’s been sounding exponentially prescient for quite a while now

I went down Virginia, seekin’ shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable
I watched the tower grow
Five Year Plans and New Deals, wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder, who’ll stop the rain?
