The “averted a mass shooting” framing—as if it was a certainty—is problematic. It’s certainly what APD wants reported, but news orgs should approach it with more nuance. The potential alleged shooter obviously needed intervention, but saying he was going to shoot is pre-crime shit.

When you are a local public affairs news outlet and you put out what certainly appears to be a paid PR piece glorifying a developer whose favorite book is…(wait for it)

We really don't have to pretend Charlie Kirk wasn't an abhorrent person, even if you disagree with the political violence used to oppose him.

Unfortunately, no live thread for the Atlanta City Council today. I caught covid over the weekend, and I’m still under the weather.

In a small personal victory, I finished my newsletter for Thursday two days in advance (except for the section that will be about a hearing happening tomorrow). I was incentivized to write in advance because of other stories I have to write this week, but I'll still take the dub.

First reported by @atlpresscollective.com, Atlanta City Councilmember Andrea Boone, daughter of Civil Rights leader Joseph E. Boone, filed a motion to ban warming centers from 1000 feet of a school Monday, when the entire city mustered two warming centers in an area of 134 sq. mi.

It passed 10-1.

Council voted to Fund PAD. Funding for Cop City failed to pass. Task force recommendations that would hurt the OIG were held in committee. A $1.5 million contract to a lobbyist was sent back to committee.

This is the craziest council meeting.

Harris lost Georgia by ~116,000 votes, coincidentally about the same number of people the Cop City Vote campaign said signed the referendum that the Democratic mayor of Atlanta didn’t let come up for a vote.

The referendum itself isn’t why Harris lost. (cont)

I’ll let national pundits talk about national voting trends. I’m looking at local votes.

Harris underperformed Biden in both Fulton and DeKalb Counties, losing about 10,000 votes between the two.

Nota bene: Votes are still being counted; these numbers will change slightly.
