If it was happening when I was consulting, I wouldn't expect I would have heard anything so I wouldn't exclude that time period

BioWare veteran Mark Darrah has discussed the $55bn private acquisition of EA and what the future holds for the RPG studio, suggesting it could be sold to pay off debt. https://bit.ly/3IDtWl0
On YouTube, @markdarrah.bsky.social has stated that he was unaware about the EA talks to potentially sell BioWare, during his tenure there.

He was consultant for Dragon Age Veilguard development, which narrows down the timeline.
Sony aims to become 'entertainment trading house' with IP pickups

➡️ asia.nikkei.com/business/com...

Sony has invested almost $13B into IP over the last seven years through buying, developing and combining businesses, seeking to synergize across games, film/TV, anime, and music.
Per Insider Gaming, there were talks to sell BioWare at some point.

However they left it vague on when this had happened and it's unclear what happened to these talks.
Reminder that Mass Effect TV show will also start filming in Q4 2026.

It would be bizarre to kill off the game while still pushing the show with Amazon.

It seems likely that Next Mass Effect might still be safely set for future release.
Next Mass Effect is still very much in active development, by April 2026 it should be deep in production, a potential security to keep studio intact.
There is a major concern within BioWare studio that they will be first to suffer big cuts after new owners take over.

However nothing official will be set before April 2026 and EA sale won't come into effect before Q1 2027.
In a follow-up comment, he mentions that it is unlikely that BioWare goes independent, but Sony or Microsoft could be potential buyers. In another comment he also mentions Amazon and Disney.
Mark Darrah's commentary on the $55 billion EA deal.

Owing to the 5% interest rate, he believes that it's more likely that IPs and studios may be sold off, as shutting them down only cuts costs.

😬
It’s official: EA is going private.

The leveraged buyout will be financed by a staggering $20 billion of debt, which likely means some *aggressive* cost cutting is ahead for EA in the coming months and years.

Buyers: So your games... guns and football, yes?

EA: Mmhmm, mmhmm, mostly guns and football, yep.

Buyers: No gay stuff? No politics we're not going to like?

EA: Haha, definitely not! Hey, could you give me one sec? I just need to shut down a studio real quick.
