Having an autism diagnosis has helped me be kinder to myself about this stuff. I am aware I’m susceptible to sensory overwhelm and not great at peopling, so I take breaks, keep a bottle of water with me, wear very comfortable clothes, am selective about what I attend and where I sit, etc.
I’m American and grew up saying/hearing it. Living in Cornwall now, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone use it recently. I interpret it to mean I’m going to stop delaying on something, or I’m going to make a point of getting started. But I can see how it’s become irritating verbal filler.
Can relate. And they’re mostly in my right eyebrow, not the left one.
If you haven’t watched Boots on Netflix, you probably should. Disclaimer: I’m a Marine brat and the same age as the author of the book the series is based on, and even though joining the military was never in the cards for me, there’s a lot that’s relatable in the story. It’s excellent.
I have started putting crabmeat in jambalaya instead of prawns and it’s as good as it sounds.
Yeah, the prognosis is a bit grim. But the places you want to visit are the ones being targeted by ICE. I lived in Korea for 3 years and have gone back a bunch of times since then to visit. There’s a reason it’s having a soft-power moment: it really is that fun and interesting (and with good food).
I’ve been to all the US ones and lived in California and the PNW (Portland and Seattle) for some years. Highly recommended but wait until the fash are out of power. Japan, on the other hand, is amazing. So is Korea, which is really worth a visit if you’ll be in that neck of the woods.
Probably two chapters and an epilogue away from finishing the new novel. Took the day off to read. As much fun as I’ve had with this thing, the ending is complex and I need to account for a number of moving parts. Also, I’m increasingly sure I know where I’m going with the next one, which helps.
Just watched the new Drag Race UK episode. Reminded of something I’ve been thinking for years: so many of the queens are entering the competition too soon. I had a bit of success in my late 20s and handled it badly. I’m still around, which is an accomplishment, but fame at an early age is corrosive.
Truro is peculiar in having only one main east-west road on this side of the city. It’s been closing at 7pm for the last week or so for roadwork. I keep vampire hours and rarely venture out before 6. It’s been like house arrest. I did make it out tonight but had to loop home via the A30. Far. 🤪🫤
Oh dear god I did not need that in my imagination
Anyone else watching True Haunting on Netflix? I just watched the first 3 episodes. That’s some proper ghost story goodness.
I’d click on like but that would be a little ghoulish. Hope you’re okay.
That too. It’s like there’s this need to be triumphant over some imaginary nameless oppressor. Struggle, performance, hesitant triumphalism (while atrocities are carried out but minimized), rinse, wash, repeat.
First decent night’s sleep in a week. The new Stratus variant of Covid, which I apparently have had, comes with tooth pain as a fun new symptom. Sinus headache + aching mouth + chills + nagging cough at night = enough already. Bleh. At least now there is windy stormness to listen to. ⛈️ 🌀 🤒
Hard relate. Is that a phrase? It should be.
Fitzgerald said: “I thought that childhood was a game that I had to win, so I’ve been doggedly copying everyone around me. Now, everyone thinks I’m normal, except they all still seem to hate me a little bit, for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on.”

I just saw it for the first time last year. There was one night it was so intense even people in the US were seeing it. I’m glad I finally did, even if this far south it was kind of wispy. Bucket list for me too.
I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the aurora tonight. The streetlights go out around midnight here, so it’s pitch black at night. It was sort of clear, and somehow now there’s dense fog. Because, you know, Cornwall.
I stopped using Grindr years ago and haven’t looked back.
Essential reading if you’re a writer or in some other area of publishing. Really, plus ça change etc etc. The real work of being a writer isn’t so much getting the big advance (which can tank your career) as it is managing to keep getting published, ideally more or less on your own terms.
