I really want to thank @mdbell79.bsky.social and @ambersparks.bsky.social for this morning’s writing newsletter.
As someone 3 months into a new project that is mostly a lot of notebooks filled with random facts & ideas, it gave me a structure to organize the junk drawers & the kitchen sink!rr

Anyone familiar with the political culture of the Trumpian GOP will not be surprised by this reporting on today's Young Republicans, but all decent human beings will be appalled by it.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

FUCK CANCER.

RIP D’Angelo

I hadn’t listened to him in a while, and then this past weekend, had this huge hankering to hear him. Wound up listening and falling back in love with him.

Not to be weird, but perhaps his energy was out in the ether as he was saying goodbye.

The Regime's goal is to grind everyone down. Plain & simple. Our goal is to refuse this by taking turns to fight where and how we can. When one group needs to bow out, then another group needs to step in and so on. We don't all have to do everything. We can all do something though. Stay in the fight

I think this is going to be the punch-drunk, exhausted baseball game.
Expecting a scoring free-for-all.

I believe what’s being described here is COLLABORATION. “I don’t want to look bad in front of my peers so I’ll praise the dictator” means you’re cooperating with evil. Guess what that makes you?

The psychology that twists coverage in Trump’s favor is transparent, once you accept that psychology plays a role. They want to be perceived as neutral by their peers, and they know their peers suspect them of anti-Trump bias. So they demonstrate independence by scrutinizing Dems and praising Trump.

There were at least two ceasefires under Biden! In which more than five times as many living Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians! Has everyone forgotten this?

I'm not saying this to be "woke" or whatever but this really is something white men like me need to comment on. We're the ones doing the promoting, we're the ones who are the problem.

Y'all ain't getting free until Black people are getting free. Sorry, tough cookies! It's because you hate seeing us free so bad you're in such a pickle.

In Portland, an ambulance was summoned to the ICE office to treat an injured protester (not clear how he was injured). But when the patient was loaded inside, ICE officers refused to let the ambulance leave and threatened to shoot the ambulance driver: www.wweek.com/news/2025/10...
Documents Allege a Federal Agent at Portland ICE Threatened to Shoot an Ambulance Driver
Feds delayed medics who had come to pick up an injured protester. Then, according to confidential incident reports, the agents became aggressive.

I still think we should dig her up and drive a stake through her heart just to make sure she’s permanently dead.

On the centenary of Thatcher's birth, there have been predictable calls for a memorial to her memory. But Britain's 2300 food banks serve that purpose already.

Indigenous communities have cared for Oregon’s lands since time immemorial. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor that stewardship. We recommit to confronting the legacy of settler colonialism and building a more just, equitable future that centers Indigenous voices.

ICE is thug trash.

This morning I was filming ICE abducting sometime in Petworth. One of the agents told me "the last US citizen that did this he put in cuffs all the way to the courtroom".

The 1st time I did a major book cull, I donated all of it to a men’s prison library in Florida.
I think this time I’d give it to our local library (only bc prisons here don’t accept hardbacks.)

I'm sure the books in your library will be a goldmine secondhand. In a little free library or donated to public libraries or university libraries. I think if you've decided you no longer want to share space with a lot of your books you can bring benefit to people.

Pros and cons of getting rid of 90 percent of my library of books?

What do my writer friends think?

I think the return of Oregon rain has set me off. It’s still barely light, it’s been raining steadily for days, and I am working on a long-term writing project for which I want lots of light and space.

Great thread on the distinctive political culture of Portland, by a US historian who is very much from Portland.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.
