Good intentions are not enough. Organizers need tangible tools.

I'm creating virtual workshops to bring resilience and replenishment to the people who hold our local communities together: employees, volunteers, helpers, and caregivers in mutual aid groups, nonprofits, and grassroots collectives.

This isn't about blame. It's about truth. And I believe any truth, no matter how difficult, is more solid ground to stand on than a beautiful lie.

My new commitment is to one question, in any conflict, personal or professional: "Are we looking at a branch, or are we brave enough to find the root?"
liveforlovessake.bsky.social
So, I’m putting down the pruning shears. I'm done with surface-level fixes. My new work is subterranean. It’s the slow, messy work of tracing problems back to their source.

It means asking "Why?" until I'm uncomfortable and looking at my own part in the soil, and then doing what I can about that.

The cost was my clarity. I started to feel crazy.

My feelings seemed 'too big' because they weren't just about the last thing that happened, they were a response to the entire, unseen cascade. I was being asked to justify a flood by pointing to a single drop of rain.

In my own life, this looked like having the same fights with different words, on a loop. It was me trying to perfectly manage my reaction to the 50th falling domino, while the first one was tipped over years ago and never addressed.

I have been exhausted from treating symptoms.
liveforlovessake.bsky.social
I used to think my problem was that I couldn't keep the leaves green. I'd pour all my energy into the branches, and be confused when they'd wither again.

It took me too long to realize I was diagnosing and caring for the wrong end of the tree.

I was ignoring the roots. A thread on root causes. 🧵
A photo of a the exposed root system of a tree, next to a street in South Carolina. My son was about 5 at the time and looks tiny, standing on a giant root.

WIC, which helps feed babies and new moms, is facing critical funding issues.

But ICE’s mass deportation operation—which has attacked faith leaders in Chicago—is raging on uninterrupted during the GOP shutdown. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us,” said Rev. Black.

Priorities.

"While new moms worry about formula for their infants and furloughed federal workers stress about next month’s rent or mortgage, the administration’s mass deportation obsession will continue uninterrupted," writes @tusk81.bsky.social

This says everything about this administration’s priorities.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Good morning and happy Sunday. Hug your loved ones and do one thing today that’s just for you…not for work, not for someone else, and not because you “should.” Stay positive and say no to authoritarians.

If you’re in El Paso, home to Ft. Bliss and Biggs Field, and need food assistance, the Mustard Seed Cafe (where I volunteered) provides hot fresh food Wed-Friday. No questions asked. It’s main purpose was providing meals in a restaurant and dignified setting for unhoused, but is now for all… free.

It’s heartbreaking that the richest country in the world needs food banks to feed its people but it’s unbelievable that our billionaire politicians have forced our military to feed themselves and their families from food banks.

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

Amused and honored to be included in the WatchCanadaGrow starter pack by @checkingobitsdaily.bsky.social! 🍁

As a Minnesotan who has been nicknamed "Canada" before while living in a southern state, and who has family up there, I'll take it as the highest compliment.

Thank you for the welcome!

This is one of the most hopeful stories about fixing broken systems I've seen.

Two nurses, tired of bureaucracy, founded a nurse-led organization with no managers. They put human connection back at the center of care.

The model is now world-famous. A brilliant example of what's possible.

Another reason to mask at protests, aside from COVID safety and protection from doxxing, is that a lot of responsible documenters don't want to publish protesters' faces (esp without their consent) right now. Your face being in a shot may prevent people from sharing a worthwhile image publicly.

They are not planning "a violent crackdown" on 10.18. What they are doing is sending a signal to their shock troops to try to cause havoc. But those shock troops will be vastly outnumbered. Go out and protest freely. Do not be cowed.

NEWS: In a case with national implications, @governorwalz.mn.gov's officials are approving Blackrock's takeover of one of the Midwest’s largest utilities.

Critics say the precedent-setting move paves the way for more Wall Street firms to buy utilities to further hike skyrocketing electricity rates.
