Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.
Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

now I need to hop on a bit of uni2 but I’m scared of pinging for games
I tried to lock in and play some ggst today in order to de-rust after roughly a month of not playing any fighting games for more than 30min between writing breaks, and I ended up losing a ton of elo and now I'm no longer in top 50 i-nos lol

the unfortunate thing is that a lot of anime torrents rip the amazon/CR/bluray subs these days rather than translating and typesetting from scratch, so if fudging localization through AI becomes an industry standard it'll impact the pirate market too
